If those goodyear tires are "Polyglas"then I believe the story. I had a set of those great looking tires on my 1965 Mustang at one time, and they drove me nuts for balance. I replaced them with Pirelli P77's and did fine, but another set of Polyglas tires came stock on my Vega GT Wagon, and they never were any trouble at all, for over 100,000 miles. That Vega never even began to burn oil at all, only had one set of tires its entire life, and only had its brake pads replaced once. Another Vega we had didn't do so well, but it also never burned oil at all.

But, how much rust was on that Vega?

None at all on either one. No salt on the roads in that area. The wagon lasted from 1973 to 1988, and could have gone on much longer. The guy who bought it dropped a 350 in it.
