As difficult as it is to recall the worst of times, which can't be avoided when armed service is remembered, it is our reinforcement of the positive, the honorable and even noble sacrifices and courage of the ordinary soldier, marine or sailor that upholds those who serve, supports them not only when they have special days like this, but on the occasion of bad days when the worst of times try to compete for attention. Today is a day for us to drown out the bad memories with praise and gratitude, not only for those who serve, but for those whose service is not voluntary- the families living in crappy base housing that makes a mother cry and the rest of the families who wait for their soldier to come home safe (I speak as a veteran witness of these). So much goes into service that no one sees. I was born in the Army, during the middle of the Korean War, to a man and woman who had already survived two theaters of WWII (post Normandy Europe and the surrender and occupation of Japan). My father was a soldier. My mother and I, like hundreds of thousands of other family members of soldiers, truly served our part, too.

Today's soldier's families make sacrifices that make us look like we lived in luxury. The next time somebody talks about chopping vet benefits or messing with the VA budget, please think about chopping something of theirs off and vote accordingly. Amen.

As a 20 year Navy "brat", 20 year AF member and now, having been retired more than 20 years, I have seen everything you mentioned and now with my "stepson" in the Rangers I continue to see the deterioration of benefits. There are no more NCO/Officer/Enlisted clubs, they are talking about defunding the commisaries and many of the on base things like wood and auto hobby shops went away because they had to be self supporting. Anyone that serves in this day and age must be a patriot because the inducements we had just aren't there anymore.
