Fishing who me

Alright Harry I took your bait
Well As I live on an Island , literally, surrounded by water.
Those of the Great Lakes,, this one being Lake Ontario.
And the Island sits in what is called the bay of Quinte, hearalded by many as the greatest Walleye waters in the world. This is where a 3lber is king as it tastes a lot better than a 14lber.
My bait of choice is a chartreuse lead jig with a twin tail wiggler and a chunk of pork rind on the hook.
Never failed me , and the meat is a flakey and white as cod. Now Harry , I use a special, blend of breading and spices to cook these babies up with. If its a catch from ice fishing ,, it gets done in the frying pan. But if its a spring catch, then it gets wrapped in foil with chunks of russett apple, celery, and barbecued. The cheeks are the size of a silver dollar, but great tasting tidbits.
The bass up here are generally small mouth, and good little fighters for game fish. My lure of choice has always been a red devil with a blue grub lure in the big lake, but on the inland lakes I like to use the old chartreuse spinners, or occasionally a blueish silver ,shad fluke.
Then its shoreline lunch with taters and fresh fish on an open wood fire.
My 2nd favourite past time.
So do, tell Mr W.
There has to be a secret recipe in there somewhere. :text-goodpost:

I like that. And the recipe too.
Here both small and largemouth are the fun. We have streams and small rivers that have great fast water sections where these bass wait for me to entertain them. I'll start with a Storm white guppy early Spring and of course a good old Rebel crawbaby. Later in the year Creme natural or bubble gum colors.
After I have taught these fish a good lesson, about 100 yards away is prime Trout territory. Very small streams that are naturally spring fed, and it produces some excellent dinner specimens. Good oil foil with garlic butter is about all you need for these. Of course off a fresh campfire of applewood seals the deal.
But if this isn't fun enough, you have use the right tackle. As with a lot of things, I like to go old school at times. :) I have a friend who has been restoring outfits his whole life. I am lucky as he has given me many a present and the looks I get from the occasional angler I see is priceless.

This is a good example of the kind of items he works with. St. Croix Fishing Machine 1976 :) And yes, smooth as silk.

Nice kit Harry, if it works use it.
From 99 till 2002 I was working way up in Northern Ontario about 175 miles north of Thunder Bay.
Wilderness, this is the Place ! Armstrong , an old DEW line station from the cold war days.
Anyway the ice up there didnt leave the lakes until late May, but when it did even the ditches around the office were flooded, and a 50 yd walk to the ditch would put you intouch with the Browns. A real nice tasty meal.
Every so often the guides flying back in from the far north would bring in some arctic char, the local natives would cure it in thier smokers and we would have a great feast with Char and Bannock Bread and a secret sauce the women made from wild blueberries.
It was as good as the moose roasts.
I can almost taste it now...

Interesting.
Trout, both brown and rainbow, and English perch (red-fin) are the target of choice in this area. At least they are in the lake here and waterways leading to and fro. HL is having fun with fly fishing currently. Anything olive coloured seems a favourite in the man made lake.
He's recently tried soft plastics for the first time. Hates to admit it, but he likes the outcome. Although American brands are readily available, the best results come from locally developed Squidgies.

I used to go for crappie, both white slab crappie and black crappie in TVA lakes in Tennessee and Mississippi. We used 1/64 oz. spinner jigs with red spot white grubs (the tiniest there is). The technique is to drrop the bait deep, maybe 20 feet or so,near the shore where trees shade the water. Then just raise the bait and let it flutter down, in 5 minutes, you have a nice panfish. We used to catch our limit, cook supper on the shore, then drop off all the rest of the fish at the house of some folks we knew who had a lot of kids. The kids used go nuts in the yard when my old truck came up the driveway. Mama was a great cook.

Ok, Crappie is a whole different subject.
There is a few "holes" in the river here that are what some call "supper holes". Just a yellow or white grub and you can fill a bucket quick :)

Walleye fishing is my second passion. I have a fully rigged Lund and live within 60 miles of a very productive reservoir. Lure of choice is a 1/16 ounce Northland Tackle Whistler jig tipped with a leech. I also do a lot of trolling utilizing planner boards and crank baits. Fried walleye, fried potatoes and onions and a cold beer makes for a feast.
