Thompson Speedway Vintage Race weekend

Postby turbokev » Sun Jun 29, 2014 4:08 am

I was in Connecticut at Thompson Speedway Thursday, Friday and Saturday attending the Grand 'Re-opening" of the oldest road course in the country..
2 vintage race groups were there.. 9 classes of cars with over 200 different race cars in attendance.

I'll be posting a few highlight pictures and a link to a slide show later.. lots of interesting cars were there.

I arrived early on Thursday and got camper permit number 1.. I had my pick of the camp area so I set up against the fence under 4 huge oak trees..
Nice and shady during the mid day, and literally 15 feet from the racing surface at brake marker 4 at the end of the 2800 foot main straight..

As we were finishing set up, I hear a rumbling from the other side of my camper.. I walk around the corner and see this:

Image

It's a 1953 Allard J series car, one of the few with an extended wheelbase for taller drivers. This one had the Cadillac V8 and a Lincoln 4 speed.
I guess they were shipped to the US with no drivetrain and the American powerplant was added once it was here.. customer could choose the motor.

This guy, Matthew, had driven in the car he inherited from his Dad.. His Dad used to race it at Thompson Speedway in the 50's so Matthew felt compelled
to bring the car and camp out where his Dad had raced so long ago. Such a cool piece of history right next to us and a super nice owner that we spent most
of the weekend with..

Here's a random sampling of pictures I took with my iPhone while standing on the back bumper of my camper..
The cars are 'at speed' in the pictures.. cant believe the iPhone stopped motion so well..

That is great stuff! I went to a SCCA national race at Thompson in the mid '60s when the road course was separate from the oval track. I went to another race there in 1970, which was after the road course and the oval track had been combined. At that time one banked turn of the oval was used.

My race program is in my brothers camper so I can't answer the car type questions off the top of my head..
They were unusual ones for sure.. The silver car I had seen at Lime Rock before but that red car was new to me.

Here's the newest version of the layout.. (the red star is my campsite)

Posting a cool sequence shortly.. the first lap of the group 4 race had some excitement at turn one and I caught it pretty well..

OK, so Group 4 in this particular racing organization is the big bore cars..
Mustangs, Camaros, Porsches, Corvettes..

I walked up to turn 1 to get a few shots as they took the green flag and charged in to turn 1 for the first time..
My iPhone has a feature where you can hold down the volume button and it will just rapid fire pictures for
as long as you hold it down or till you run out of memory.. I got a 77 picture sequence of the first turn chaos.

Just posting a few here so you get the idea, but I'll post a link to a slide show later if you want to see the whole sequence.

A white Porsche had the pole, silver Camaro outside pole..followed by a blue fastback Mustang and a yellow coupe Mustang..
As the came down at over 100mph to turn one, the Porsche downshifted and wheel hopped the rears and headed off track..

Image

Now he's sliding along next to the track and momentum is going to carry him back on to the track just as the lead cars turn in..

Image

Image

Here he comes back on to the track.. somehow no contact was made as the Camaro took a wider line to avoid the Porsche..

Image

Image

..and then the remainder of the cars had to deal with the wall of dirt / dust driving blind in to the turn..

Every single car made it through the mess with no contact, and nobody spun out, even the Porsche that started it all..

It was certainly a 'right place, right time' moment~

Awesome! "a white Porsche had the pole..." Maybe it was an ex-rallye car? Somehow I think this is an indication of how things will look on the RSR IROC race.

This is soo soo schweet that the track is now back in racing.
