Track Lighting

Postby Flytoo » Wed Jul 02, 2014 10:50 am

I'm currently using 3, regular workbench type lamps, to illuminate my track. Each lamp has a 60 watt "old fashioned" General Purpose Light Bulb. They do a great job of lighting the track. Problem is, they also do a great job of raising the temperature in my toy room. I was wondering if the new Halogen's would reduce the heat, while still providing ample light? The room is air conditioned and I also have a fan running.

Thank you both! I do appreciate it. I think I'll give the halogen's the first shot and then, and go from there. Never would have thought about the other 2 options.

Do you have the option of using a standard fluorescent shop light?

Some of these have a on/off chain and plug right in a standard outlet.

I like halogens personally. They give great light and are dimmable. The curly lights are an abomination. They cost a fortune, they are prone to exploding or flaring and you require a hazmat suit to clean up after they break (mercury). LEDs are getting better and will be the way of the future once the cost comes down. They are very cool and last an eternity. I still don't like their intensity, but they are getting better every year. They claim to be dimmable, but you do require a special LED dimmer. There are dual purpose incandescent/led dimmers, but my experience is that they flicker periodically with LEDs.

As for the fluorescent shop light, ...Oh how I wish I would've asked this question before I bought those 3 clamp on lights. Those would have been the cheapest solution.

Thanks for the tip on which halogen bulbs not to buy! I had no idea about those curly ones. I'm guessing, I need to buy the ones that look more like the old style incandescents? Thank you all for the help!
