Posted: Tue Oct 30, 2012 8:00 amIn the 30's last night. Rain Sunday and all day yesterday, quitting late last night. Lot of wind this morning with some gusts making it hard to drivet he SUV. All in all, not bad here though. Hope everyone to the north stay safe.

Posted: Tue Oct 30, 2012 10:07 amWe made it, too. The trees seem well enough, but the ground is saturated and even on top of my hill, it isn't even beginning to drain or soak in. The tree can flop over at any time when that happens, and then it can take years of care to keep root rot from killing every tree and shrub on the place. This soil isn't intended for fast draining like soils from wetter places on the planet. Saturation is dangerous here.
This area hasn't had a hurricane or tropical storm before Isabel, that is, for over 100 years, so the trees and everything else has never had to endure high winds. That's why Virginia lost 3 million+ trees in Isabel, and then some more in Gaston, Irene, now Sandy. We have an environmental disaster in the making if we can't get a ten or twelve year break from these supersoakers.
