You guys need to go to your local scrapyards when you need brass, aluminum or titanium. I got 2 lbs of chassis and bearing making brass for $6. Aluminum is $1 a lb. And Ti22 jumps all over the place. Ram chips are $5 each whether DDR2 or DDR3. I am building my supplies now for when I retire. I turned in 12 lbs of aluminum pop cans to get the brass.

I have made over $1000 this year from scrap and $15000 since 2008 (or was it 2007?).

I went again today to get rid of some aluminum windows. They had a bin of HDs to be scrapped. There was a 640 gig one on top. All are $5.00 apiece. I said, "Hey, what is there to lose?" Brought it home, put it in the external case, deleted the partitions, and it formatted without a hitch. I also talked to Scott the worker about life and came home. Nice time and nice HD. Selling is part of it but saving money on buying is another part.

I am "recycling" some laptops myself. Lucky enough to work close to the disposal point for old systems and once they "hit the rim" of the dumpster? They are fair game.

Yes, I am a dumpster diver :)

Almost all the laptimer systems I have had over years, including the ones donated to clubs, have came from here. The HRW Skunkworks back up is a recycle, and the laptop my daughter uses for her school is as well.

If you do not have a scrap yard close by, or they do not do business like Dan's...check your local Salvation Army. I have 3 I visit and you can ask them about any computer systems and they always let me go in back and dig through them. They are more than happy to let you as it takes a long time for them to go through them and test them before bringing them out on the floor.

Dan - I am always happy to hear your scrappy stories! Great stuff! I too recycle old PCs and the like. Good money to still be had.

I have five flat panel monitors here and 1 flat panel TV for me and the guys in the group to use for timing. I got a student scraping and he bought a car.

I have people who have me haul their stuff away as they live in communities that require them to keep it inside or dispose of it. Their problem is trash removal does not pick up certain things without making special arrangements to have it hauled. A guy asked me if I wanted a broken treadmill. I asked what was broken. It was the frame (?). So I now have a 2 hp DC motor and the electrical stuff. Guess where it will go. Lathe! DC motors supposedly run metal and wood working tools more smoothly than AC motors. It is not always about money but sometimes about not spending money.

A lot of stuff I do deals with ethical concerns. I do not want my hobbies interfering with family budget. Some things are sources of discretionary funds. This too is shared but with no questions asked what it is spent on. Guess what? They don't question my spending because they know I made the money outside of the budget.
