I got my yearly diabetes checkup -- went from a 6.9 to a 6.2. Blood pressure went from 189 over 82 to 139 over 81.

Dan,
Keep up the good work. I truly share your pain. I had a triple bypass in December of 2013 because I did not listen to my doctors for many years. Can't blame it on cholesterol as my LDL is 78 - been there almost my entire life. But high blood pressure and diabetes were major contributors. At my last visit, my BP was 122 / 74 and my doc was quite pleased. However after a few surgeries and the resulting meds, my A1C went from 5.4 to 6.8.
I am working very hard on getting the A1C back down to where it was before all the surgery. Black coffee is all I now drink rather than a fancy coffee. No bread, no potatoes, no rice, no pasta. Just baked, broiled or grilled meat - mostly chicken - is now what my diet consists of.
While it is not easy, especially for someone that likes food, it can be done.
Also remember this, exercise will knock down your A1C. I'm doing 30 minutes each day on my stationary bike.
Let's hear more good news and soon.

Yeah I'm in the club, too. Have one heart stent from 5 years ago and more recently was told I couldn't have one in the other side of the heart so I'm doing the diet and medication control thing. Amazing how accomplished one can get at reading and translating those charts on the packages. Got my BP and cholesterol controlled and take meds for the edema. Trying to stay as active as I can but run out of gas sooner than I like (she keeps telling me I'm not 30 anymore). The rest of you stick with it, it's worth it!

Well, in a way it is nice to that we share something in common other than slot cars... perhaps we should start a health section, I felt encouraged just reading your stories. Last week I got to go to Seattle for a great week. Quad bypass and some a fib work done.
I previously had five stents, Three 100% blocked. Right now sore as hell but alive.. Flordia_Slotter I am impressed that you can exercise, that gives me a lot of hope. Before my last heart attack and stent in 2010 I was able to walk over a mile a day. Since then I couldn't hardly do anything, daily chores around here was about it. Complained to DR, felt like he just blew me off. Changed location and with that Dr's higher up the food chain and what a difference they made. So hoping in time I'll be able to exercise again and get some work done around here..

Lotus56 don't feel bad about the energy level......I used to be able to go do chores around our 9 acre place then go in and work swing shift. since my second attack in February I "run out of gas" and have to stop and rest much more often than I think I should, part of it is the meds, and part just protecting my ticker by not overdoing it. Driving is a perfect example; used to be able to do the 15 hours down to see her son no sweat.....now it's a 2 day trip broken up by frequent "rest stops" thanks to the water pills. On the plus side, I am able to do a bit more each day and being semi-retired I can set my own schedule.
FlaSloter: As to the club name, how about "The League of Aged Methane Gas Producers"? :character-oldtimer:
