My Dad was a great guy - hardworking, willing to help anyone, loved to laugh, and had a way of coming up with 'work arounds' for all sorts of problems. But he was also a bit absent minded. When he went into business for himself keeping his trucks, backhoe, and bulldozer running was always important, so he'd buy extra parts to be able to make a repair after hours or on weekends. Trouble was, many times when he needed something he couldn't remember where he'd put it. When my wife and I cleaned out his garage a few years ago when the property was being sold, we found all sorts of new stuff in the back of shelves, up by the ceiling beams, and all over. Boxes of spark plugs, oil and air filters, hydraulic hoses, even the spare carburetor he actually needed but never found so he had to buy a new one.

When I broke a router bit last week working on my new track I knew I had one spare but didn't want to risk breaking it and having everything come to a standstill so I went out and got a new one. Then, while looking for a bolt yesterday I came across a bin with 4 brand new 1/8" router bits I'd bought previously 'just in case'. Most came from a salvage store and were great deals, around $5 each, very nice compared to the new one I spent $19 on. I had to laugh at myself and once again remember from wench I came. Not only didn't this apple fall far from the tree, it seems to have rolled backwards.

:lol: well I thought maybe it was just me due to my age,and wasn`t about to post it on here,but since its been brought up I`ll havta say yep just like tha ol man my dad! :lol: :lol: I was rearranging tha back porch the other day and I found 2 bags of motors(4 per bag) I`d ordered last year,tha kicker is I just ordered 8 more approx. a month ago! (sent Mick 4) :lol: should hava good supply for a while! :laughing-rolling:

Ah yes. Most of us have that "gene". My maternal Grandfather was a great one for "just in case" or "might need it someday". To this day I still find things he bought because he "just might need it" still in the package and priced 35 years ago. By the same token as we are cleaning out things and lightening ship I have had more than one "I knew I had one of these someplace". At this point someone give me Tim Taylor grunt!

I started this thread because it's so heartwarming when everyday events remind me of my father (and mother) and I get a chuckle out of it. Many on the forum have shared stories about things they learned from their fathers and grandfathers - how to make and fix things, how to create new from old, etc. It's also nice to reflect on what we inherited or picked up just from being cut from the same cloth.
