I've arrived, at ,,,,,,,, overwhelmed

Well its finally sunk in, I have been collecting kits and bodies and cars and parts, for so long now I can't remember when I started. So I go, down to, the bench, and I have so many projects, I can't figure where to start, and obviously what to finish.
I'm sure I can't be the only one who has been there. I pick up storage containers, and more storage containers, and I am still hanging stuff from the ceilings and in the floor joists.
what do you guys do to keep organized, or on track( sorry about the pun) without going off the deep end.
Some kind of list, some order of projects ?
Ideas and suggestions welcomed.
My name is Bob and I am a slot addict, without a method. :text-yeahthat:

It may seem simple-minded, but if you go visit your local Home Depot or better, Lowe's, you will see containers that inspire you to reorganize and when you get home with a few of the goodies, you'll have a few satisfied days of setting up. Then, when you look at what you've done, you will know exactly where to start and go to it!

Yup.
I have boxes of stuff. I go through them periodically looking for something, and find things that I forgot I had. Like a resin 312P coupe kit, that I was going to bid on via eBay...but I already got one

I don't have a good system. I work on several projects at once...which is probably my downfall.

Organization is the key...says the CDO (OCD spelled out properly!) one of the resin world. I work on multiple projects that often span years. I have to keep things organized so I at least know what I've got. I label boxes so I know what is in them and I always go through stuff at least once a year and get rid of stuff I know I'll never use. Besides, that gives me money to buy more projects I'll never do...

Some cheap shelves, or some cheap storage like Rob says is the way to go. Home Depot or any of the box stores can help, and if you have an IKEA nearby, they have TONS of inexpensive crates, boxes, storage items. I also use a few old cafeteria trays for projects I need to move around. I can keep a project on it using a Scalextric lid to hold parts.

Yes, well...making a trip for new storage containers helps. I discovered this on the recent rebuild of the Skunkworks. I found a good old fashioned peg board has helped a lot. A quick glance tells me what I am low on and what I have plenty of. Same thing for those simple drawer/parts cabinets.

But the real key is getting one of the many out of the storage and onto to the work bench :)

As crazy as it sounds, I let the folks here and the friends I run with motivate most of my builds. Shotgun Dave makes a Sedan? I want one too. Doc makes a Cougar? I'm in. Btaylor cranks out bombers? Oh yeah, I want in on that :)

Try this: I set up a build and commit to doing at least something to it every day. It might just be a very small task like cutting the axles the right size that only takes a few minutes, or a full hour or two making/adjusting a chassis. Just anything that gets that car one step closer to the track :)

Chappy, your post could have been me writing it
I am so disorganized, that I'll push back projects on the table and start new ones. And those get pushed back for more new ones. Once in a while I'll get something finished, but the leftover parts seem to always be in the way afterwards... (and yes, they'll get pushed back as well)

I keep telling myself...someday I'll get things straightened out... but then I start a new project instead...

Looks like this might be a common disease! I suffer from the same symptoms! My workbench, looks like a clip from a disaster movie, projects are stacked,Parts are strewn everywhere, and yet somehow i manage to build stuff anyway??
I have seen those rare pictures of work area's like Davids, and i know they exist. Just not in my chaotic shop!
Storage? its all storage, just NOT organized.

Yup. I've got it too. All attempts at organizing things have failed to date. Just don't have room for such things. Only space is under the track. Need to find some draw systems that will fit under the track table but don't cost an arm or a leg.

These are nice bins that we found at Lowe's.

Not bad price really...and they do the job on the little things.

For the bigger things?

Wal-Mart or just about any store like it carries these. Even Dollar General has some. Again, not very expensive but sure make you look good even when you are not :)

Right then This weekend will be taken up with a Friday night at Walmart, and the rest of the weekend sorting and storing. The label machine will be hot and I hope to see the bottom of the pile, it should look like a work surface.
I think I have to have a junk bag, and recognize junk for what it is.
instead of the old,,,,, oh I might need that one day, kind of like 2x4 cutoffs if its over 10 inches long it could be useful thinking. I like the storage drawers ideas, and the peg board, I think I might get a clipboard for my own honeydo list.
Thanks for the great ideas everyone, and also for the support and not alone posts.
once I get sorted I will take some pictures, and try to post them.
All the best
Bob

My last clean up attempt netted me a tuning bench that I try to keep clear for tuning only. But it desperately needs some light under the shelf.
Image
The carousel thing has removable compartmentalized boxes. Each one contains a set of pinions, crowns or spurs. Motors are in the drawer below. Wheels, inserts and screws in the little drawer set.

On the left end of the bench is the paint stripping department.

And yet my actual workbench is still a mess.

Chappy,

Well my friend, I do have some sad news for you. It is obvious that you have an overwhelming case of SCADD or Slot Car Attention Deficit Disorder - not to be confused with CDO or other maladies.

You simply want to be able to build all these cars and as you're working on one of them, your mind drifts much like a car without magnets and well you drop what you're doing and start working on something else.

Sound familiar? I thought so.

BTW - I also have severe SCADD and enjoy it regularly. There is no cure for it, thankfully!

Enjoy!

Thanks Marty, I do believe you've nailed it lol.
Tomorrow I hit Wally World for the storage containers.
I have seen these great little project boxes.
The top back is open, the top front flips up, and underneathare 3 closed drawers that can each hold 1 car and bits to be built.
I am looking forward to them, and also a couple of larger ones for car storage and tool storage.
I will post later when I'm back to Organizedville ,,, .
Thanks everybody
Bob
