Got my old Ford 2N going at last

A couple weeks ago I posted about both of my tractors going down at the same time; well the Kubota was just a filter change and fluid top up. However after replacing the blown hydraulic line on the Ford it still had the ignition problem.....I had hot wired it through a toggle switch so I could run it on the battery. The problem was I was only getting 3 volts at the coil instead of 12 (it has been converted). I pulled the wiring harness and started shooting wires with my meter; all good. I did repair a questionable connection at the alternator but that wasn't the problem. Finally got down to the ignition switch......in all my years of working on cars, etc I have never seen this: in the "on" position the switch was presenting 200-400 ohms of resistance....normally if a switch goes bad that's it, an "open". It was a Ford part, probably been in there since 1945! Anyway, new $15 switch from Rural King and I'm good to go. What hair I have left is safe :lol: Now I have 6 acres of weeds to knock down.

Ah, the simple days!

I've been befuddled by the new electronic systems in the newer cars. I have NEVER had a car shut off at 65 mph before due to a low battery. I mean it would start most of the time and do everything else it was supposed to do, but my wife was driving and it just sent dead. I told her to relax and steer the car - it will be a whole lot harder to stter - as the vehicle slowed down. Don't use the brakes, just let it coast to a stop. She did very nicely. I got under the hood with a DVOM and started looking for the issue. Battery was at 13.2 volts, but it would not start. A good friend of mine suggested we get a new battery. We did and it's run great.

Kind of interesting, stupid but interesting.

My wife did a "car tip" one day. One of the ladies she works with had a truck and it was acting strange - dash board showed it was not a valid key and the truck would not start. Not every time, but on occasion - you know when you really need to use the vehicle. My wife said, "Change the battery." That lady did so and troubles went away.

That's a new one on me...change the battery. I was a service advisor/manager for 11 years but I've been away for 9 now so things have changed. BTW DVOM? I'm old school.....I use analog! :banana-dance:

I hear things like this and I wonder why anybody ever thinks that anything made after 1995 is worthwhile. Ridiculous. We all need to take a lesson from the poor Cubans... Find an old car that you like and keep working on it until its right, then drive 40 years trouble-free.
