....that wrecked our Christmas dinner but the outcome was similar. My mother-in-law ordered Christmas dinner from a national food store chain for me to pick up. When she and my wife were placing the order the clerk asked what day it was needed for and MIL replied "25th" so it was scheduled for pick up at 11:00 AM. Now my wife and MIL both asked if they were going to open on the 25th and she said 'yes'; ok, national retailers change their policies in this day and age. Well needless to say, when I got to the store (18 mile drive, one way) yesterday at 11:00 they were closed. So I came back home and called around to find what was open...our favorite oriental buffet, 25 miles East of us was open! :D Upon arrival we found every person in town appeared to be there and it was 1 1/2 hour wait to be seated so we returned home  and then proceeded to another oriental buffet SW of us (where the offending store is) for dinner. :? On the plus side the store is refunding all the money and giving a $50 gift card to cover for all of the gas used up. I guess sometimes life imitates art!

Sure is a "Christmas Story" to remember! Sounds like you made the best of a bad situation.
We ate here at home, had to, The fridge died Tuesday night sometime, and everything in it was thawed.
I spent most of Christmas eve (well into the evening) Cooking on the grille. All the meat in the freezer had had to be cooked and refrozen in the new fridge we had to buy, and go get, because there was no delivery available. If The holiday does not leave a person broke enough, Go buy a fridge when they are not on sale!
Ho Ho Ho my butt!

You should write the story and publish it. Worked for Jean Shepard. ( I read the whole book,
"In god we trust, all others pay cash", and it was laughter all the way through.)
