Spray Painting track surface?

Hi guys, Ill be up to painting my track next week hopefully. Just thinking ahead has anyone spraypainted there track? I was thinking of buying black, white, & a range of Greys all in Matt colours. Basically just spraying a bunch of colors to give a realistic effect. Im thinking it could give you a great realistic effect. Problem was the local hardware didnt have any greys in flat, just black & white.

Anyway has anyone sprayed there track? My track is MDF. WHat would you use to seal the MDF first, what type of primer? Or would you roller on normal undercoat for timber/plaster, then spray? Also what sort of grip did the spray give? & lastly what sort of spray? I was thinking a quick dry enamel.

Thought I would put it out there. Ill probably end up rollering it again. But good to hear feedback.

Greg for a combination of realistic look and decent driving surface, it's hard to go past the Dulux Suede paints. I used a few colours on mine, but it can be mixed with artist's acrylic to add extra tint or else add washes and glazes over the top with acrylics.

Lee and I both rolled our paint and then used cheap spray bottles to give the road texture. Latex paint was used for everything. I've got a write up on my website if that helps.

I rolled on a basic grey on top of white primer,then used spray grey primer,flat black and flat white with a few spritzs of brown. I like the spray can method 'cause you get a real fine mist. Traction is fine. If some of the top coat wears away .....who cares :D

I've used Rustoleum's Age Iron on a couple of tracks and might use it again on my next track!

One of the guys in my club built a test track, he painted it using sprayed on diluted latex. He ended up with a surface that just kept dusting off. If you paint MDF with a water based paint that will cause little fibers to pop up. It is best to lightly sand or scrape the surface after the first coat. If you use a solvent based paint you should have no problem with fibers. If you roll on thick paint you can get a textured surface, possibly depending on how much knap the roller has.
