Alternative to MDF?

Anyone local handle seconds of MDF? It is often used as packing material for shipping other items - I picked up 3 sheets of 8x4 for $30 because you are cutting it out it doesn't matter if the edges are a bit cracked etc..

Another place where you can save: you mentioned the cost of 1/2" MDF, but you can use 3/8". Sometimes stores don't carry it, but you can ask for it, and they'll get it to the store for you in a few days. It's also more flexible, and will make life much easier when it's time to bend stuff.

Back in the day, a lot of tracks were built with Masonite. Very smooth surface, easy to rout, cheaper than MDF, try to get 1/4" untempered if available.

Also, do you have any lumber retailers in your area besides Home Depot ot Lowes? If so, they usually have better pricing. You might have to order it, but they usually have it in 2 or 3 days. That's how it is here in NH anyways.

I have used plywood, MDF, masonite & particle board to route tracks from.
Give me 3/8" thick particle board every time.
MDF costs more and generates toooo much fine dust. Just wait till you route it or saw it. You'll want to spend some $$'s for a quality respirator if you do.
For formed banked corners masonite is required, all else will break.
I can't get MDF in 3/8" only 1/2". It doesn't flex as well as 3/8" particle board.
For routing I use a 1/8" solid carbide 4 fluted double end mill. No wear there.

Yes, its been agreed here many times in many posts that MDF dust and resin dust are both something to avoid if possible. I got a snootfull of resin dust in my nose a couple days ago, and remembered to put a mask on.

If you can do your routing outside and have someone standing by with a vacuum cleaner. A lot of routers have a connection for a vacuum cleaner, which is OK if you have to work alone, but having to drag the hose around might make maneurvering the router more difficult.

About 14 years ago, I built a particle board track with banked turns at both ends. It's still in service today. My current track is made from MDF and while it does have a smoother surface, the routing created a bunch of dust. Either way works, but that MDF dust gets everywhere.
