One track I built in a shed with poor light needed a bridge. I used a 12v fluoro tube. The next track was in a garage with good overhead lighting and there was no need for a lightbridge at all, the laptimer 2000 system worked fine. The sensors were in the bottom of the slots too.

I got frustrated with infared leds in the bridge so I switched to #194 automotive bulbs, havn't looked back :D

Been running the basement track 3 years no issues and oval has traveled all over the county still works fine.
I buy the matched pair of led/trans. from Radio Shack for around $3.

Trackmate sells a kit with all of the electrical parts, transformer, LEDs, resistors and wire for $24. Instructions are included. You would still have to build the support part.
