VW Bug rat rod build

A fellow member of GVSCC threw out the idea of a VW Bug rat rod class. There's some amazing 1:1 builds out there so being inspired, I'm jumping on this.

Image

Cut the Airfix Beetle's fenders off and mocked up some Carrera Nascar wheels with 57 Chevy front tires and Shotgun Dave rears.

Built one of my standard small car chassis using the Devised Designs super slimline motor pod.

I like where this is going with the slammed look.

Body's mounted.

Would have liked it lower but the guide's in the way.

I think a guide pivot nearer the axle would've helped.

Oh well, works for me.

I think the stance is perfect, that is going to look awesome!

Rolling chassis is my usual with a twist on the running gear.

motor pod - Devised Designs slimline motor pod
motor - Scalextric FF050 red slim can, 20K

Got a flat greyish blue in mind for the finish.

If it's a bug, squash it! ... good job.

Dan,
it looks pretty sweet, a very off the wall build for sure, but as cool as it gets. Chassis is clean and great fit, also. You could add a strip of styrene to the bottom of the body to fake a lower look if your not satisfied with the stance. I like it, great work !

Progress.

Filed and sanded down the trim but that inadvertently removed the door opening definitions as there were no impressions. So had to carefully scribe new ones. Not sure I'd remove the roofline trim again as the rear windows frames have lost something in the process.

Got some spray Tamiya TS66 Lin Gray in my supplies, so I'm thinking that'll work for a finish.

Re-mounting and glueing the Carrera Nascar plastic wheels a number of times hasn't left a really concentric fit, so the ride's a bit lumpy. Not as smooth as my other little builds but it's just for a fun class of like VW Bug rat rods.

Sprayed on some Tamiya Lin Gray in line with the theme. Added the detail parts - windows, dash/steering wheell, door, engine lid and hood handles. Finished off with a stick-on decal from Monogram's 55 Chevy kit.

Just need some headlamps and driver figure to complete.

Pleased with the result.

On to another build.
