Carrera Stub Axle

I searched on here and found lots of info on fly stub axles but very little on Carreras. I have a Carrera 69 Chevelle with the mag style wheels. I want to turn it into a Saturday night Stocker with nascar style wheels but can't figure out how to get the mag wheels off the stubs.

This is the set up where the wheels appear to rotate on the stub axles rather than the stub axles rotating. They don't appear to be two piece. Any suggestions on how to get them off the axle? I have pulled on them while holding the axle bushing with a set of pliers and I swear I pulled as hard as I could and they didn't budge. I tried to get a motor puller in there but it won't fit between the wheel and the bushing.

Any other suggestions? You guys are always so helpful I know somebody must have an idea on how to get them off. Any suggestion for mounting the other wheels once I get these off? Straight axle is not an option as the guide flag rides between the stub axles.

All I know is go easy. I had that same car and wanted to do something similar, and I tried everything I could, and never budged it. I think if you could get some tool steel and make forks to go on the faces of a vice, you might get it done, but as far as what I have done, just cut the axle with a razor saw and be done with it. I hate wasting stuff, so I never did do it.

I had some reasonable success with hot water soaking on the plastic wheel, and got a pair of reverse snap ring pliers behind the wheel to help push it off. Not foolproof, but it worked for me.
And once its off, use a piece of axle, and a Dobro collar. I would replace the nylon bushing with brass if they are not already there.

I am almost 100% certain those are 2 piece, with the head of the "axle" inside the wheel just like the other front wheels by Carrera.





These are for the Cobra/Vette...but you get the idea.

The only way I use them is to sand them down to use the originals as inserts.

When I have changed things out, I replace the assembly as Bob suggested using new wheels.

You can pop them off using a pliers or you can try a Exacto knife to try and pop them loose. I have not had any luck myself, normally end up ruining them.

I just thought of something. Long after I had my attempt with the Carrera stubs, I picked up a model train tool, called "The Puller", that just might do the job perfectly. Tomorrow, I'll try it. If it works, I'll post some photos of how I did it.

That's a great idea Paul! and a lot cheaper in the longrun than using collars. I will be borrowing this idea for sure!

I think you may have hit on something. Your idea sounds really good.

Having looked at what Harry and others have said my plan is to forget trying to get the wheels off the stubs. Instead I plan to get the nails that Paul mentions and sand them down until they will fit through a brass or plastic bearing and then put the head of the nail on the inside of the bearing, cut the nail to the correct length and press on the Nascar style wheels on the outside.

I will update you guys and let you know how it goes.

look for 10 gauge brass or steel cabinetry nails, measures 2.40 mm OD.
