MRRC Toyota Grp 5 question.

Postby Modlerbob » Thu Nov 06, 2014 11:44 pm

I just picked up one of these for $55 from Professor Motor. I see a similar one at Electric Dreams for over $100. Like Harry's review pointed out the motor is way too hot for running on a short track so I will be switching to something milder. I robbed another car (a fly Viper) to get a set of PG tires on it but the cavity inside the tires isn't quite wide enough. So. Paul, do you make a set of tires for the MRRC Toyota Celica Group 5 car?

I'm going to see how much I can get out of mine without going overboard. I've got a spare 21.5k slot it motor and I will add the PG tires using the stock wheels. I might add a bit of weight up front as it looked like the nose was bobbing up on acceleration. I'm sure that if I changed to slot.it gears and axles and the Racer rims and inserts for their 935 I would have an excellent car but it would be approaching the price of a NSR or Racer silverline.

I have PG on the rears of my MRRC Celica - but can't help you with model #....

I swapped out the plastic wheels / rear axle assembly with slot.it and swapped the motor.

You need to ensure that you glue the bushings in place as they have a tendency to pop out.

A bit of weight up front and it will turn in to a superb car - probably one of my all time favourites. A few at our club have swapped the chassis for a slot.it HRS which runs as nice as anything.

Again, thanks for the replies. My order from SCC has already been placed. I think I will be happy with it's performance without going radical with the gears and wheels. I'm just not sure what to do with that 35K red can motor. Maybe I will install it in one of my Scaley Camaros.

Bob, I had three of these at one point and mine all ran well. Tires will help, but that motor was way too hot for my track. On your wood it will probably be fantastic.

Like was said before, those are good cars if you change the motor. Still to this day I have absolutely no idea of what MRRC was thinking when they bought all of those red can motors. I forget exactly what kind of motor that I put in mine but I am sure it close to a standard Slot.it C can motor to allow it to run with my modified Fly and Sideways Group 5 cars. The Racer has been powered down as well to match the group. The Fly's have been modified to standard mid motor location with a Slot.it inline pod. The MRRC will run with all of these cars pretty well even without the adjustability of a pod. My track has lots of elevation and camber variations.

Here's a way to use the red can motor:

I got the PG tires for my Toyota and installed a slot.It orange endbell motor. After a little tuning it was running competitive laps with my Sideways BMW M1. It will only get better as it is broken in.

I put the red can MRRC motor in one of my slot.It Mclaren F1GTRs. It took the strain of the extra power very well.

Latest development with my Grp. 5 Toyota. Shapeways has a replacement chassis designed by Olifer, so in my quest to make it competitive with my Sideways BMWs I ordered the chassis. It came in the mail on the 28th of Dec and today I got around to rebuilding the Toyota. I gutted one of my slot.it Ford GTs to get the sidewinder motor pod and used the rest of the components I had used previously. It took a little while to get the front axle ride height set but everything finally came together producing a fast smooth riding Grp. 5 slot car that is every bit as good as those from Sideways. I'd show some pic's but my camera took a powder. I guess I dropped it one time too many. I've got a new one coming soon and when it arrives I'll post some images.

Lovely work on those two chassis, Dennis.

As I was looking at the pictures and saw your body mounting method a question popped up.
How do you get the pin hole in exactly the right place?
Even when I did it with a clear body I used to mess up.
