NASCAR Scalextric or SCX? Does either handle better?

Postby Abarth Mike » Fri Jan 29, 2016 10:10 pm

I have a reasonable well sorted Scalextric COT White kit and have been mulling an SCX Pro.

Apart from the 25,000 - 27,000 rpm motor will the SCX handle any better than a Scalextric. If straight line speed was the requirement i can simply use a Slot.it Yellow or equiv. in the Scalextric. I have some alloy Nascar wheels if I wish to add alloy wheels. The track is larger than home set but not huge and it does have some radius two curves.

Does SCX Pro handle better enough to justify $70?

Anyone have any insight? One way or the other? :text-thankyouyellow:

I don't have a SCX Pro Nascar but I do have the standard one and several Scalextric modern NASCARS. I prefer those from Scaley. I don't know if there is much difference if you plan to remotor. All the recent Scaleys are sidewinders and I think the SCX are inline.

Will any of these cars go around a corner if you take the magnets out?

Of course. Raced them all that way. We had a great series with the SCX versions at various tracks, but mostly my track. Tire change and some light tuning, they ran fine.

I liked the SCX models the most of course. But either worked well. We did not start any motor swapping, just left them as is. Since SCX made so many, we just stayed with them. The PRO cars were of course better, smoother and faster due to the faster RPM motor.

But if you already have a Scaley AND already have parts like better wheels, not sure you will see that much of a advantage.

I would stay with the scalextric, with or without magnets.
For non-magnet both would need weight and replacement rear tires

I run on scalextric track

I have both the Scaley and SCX Pro and raced both in our Non-magent class. On 4 different routed tracks, ranging in size from 155 feet to 60 feet. We have spec weight, motor,
gearing and wheel and tires. weight at least 100 grams, slot-it orange endbell motor and 11/34 for sidwinders and 9/28 for inlines, wheels must be 17mm and tires must be 1407
Super tires...
The SCX Pro is a top runner and holds the track record on all the tracks... It is well worth the money

I got 5 monogram stockers a few months ago, my plan was to convert to regular slot cars for anybody that comes by. My intentions are to change tires and pull magnets, cut out bottom of the chassis and replace with a piece of flat brass. Remove the interiors and lower the bodies. Maybe that would make a smooth running conventional slot car. Not sure about gears, motors and such on these cars. My experience is nil on 1/32 plastic cars.

Mike
I host the Forums Cup Nascar Proxy. This year there were 3 or 4 SCX Pro cars. These were in the top finishers on my Scaley Sport track. Who still has them?

SCX PRO NASCARs seem to have dried up.
One currently on Ebay for $70.
I managed to get eight a year or so ago. First two were from a Detroit guy at the STL slot car show; the rest off Ebay. All were around $40.
Two are duplicates. Got Fusion bodies from PB&J on Ebay to add some variety.
If my memory serves me well, there's at least one (Edwards Fusion) at a hobby shop in Bloomington, Il. for around $70.

I run on wood so the mag/no magnet thing doesn't apply to me. I have 4 SCX Pro cars, a dozen or so standard SCX cars and half a dozen Scaley Nascars. I think if all were equipped with like motors and tires on a smooth track, it would be mostly a toss up between them. Stock OTB, I have found the sidewinder Scaleys to be a tad quicker than the standard SCX. I have never tried to run the pro cars against the others because the motor difference make them like apples and oranges. Monogram cars are a different animal entirely. They are a lot of work to make run well without magnets.
