Can-Am cars to build a series

Postby slothead » Mon Aug 08, 2016 9:56 am

I currently have a bunch of late 60's - early 70's Trans Am cars I use for a solo racing series where I record the lap times for all the cars and simulate races. I do the same for Le Mans and Sebring cars from the same era. I've considered adding a Can Am series but never taken the plunge to start purchasing cars, but these cars interest me.

Electric Dreams is offering this 2 car set for $49.99. My question to the HRW community is what other similar era cars would be compatible as competition? The HSRR cars appear to be great looking replicas, but would they work in a 8 - 12 car series with Scalextric, Carerra, and others since I don't think I could fill out the series using cars from just one manufacturer.

Slot.it models are worth a look.

Dollar for dollar the Slot.it cars are the way to go if you are starting a new series. They are much better runners than their competition, their price is right and replacement parts are readily available. It also helps that they make several different makes and liveries of these cars which are all roughly on par performance wise. Fly's 917-10 can be tuned to run with the Slot.it cars with comparable parts installed. I am with Harry.

I say give the HSSR cars a try. You can get all four for $100. That's twice the cars for the same money compared to Slot It.
The HSSR cars are not on a par with Slot It, but there are a number of articles on modifying the cars (lowering, guide fix, etc.); even the HSSR website had a number of how-tos on it. Spend some time working on the cars to improve their performance. That time can be a great experience.
Side by side, I prefer the looks of the HSSR to the Slot It.
These cars were produced by Bill Peters of PBL Sn3 trains fame.

These cars are a bit like the Monogram Can-Am cars. Everyone gripes they're not like Slot Its.
Well, Chevys aren't Fords, and neither is a Chrysler. Have some variety.
I'd even recommend getting some of the Monogram cars. They're easily had for $30 - $35 dollars. Electric Dreams has some articles on it's website on modifying these cars. I did one M6A and one Lola T70. I spent time, not money (other than tires) on the cars. No, they don't run like a Slot It, but they run much better than out of the box. And look much better. I found great satisfaction doing the work.
And remember, a customer McLaren M6A was a year removed from the factory M8. It just wasn't as fast as the factory cars. Let that carry over to 1/32 scale.

Finally, you're doing this as a solo series.
Do it for fun. Forget the out of the box speed.

If you'd like a side by side picture of the HSSR and Slot It cars, PM me your email address.
