Question about Pioneer Motors

To Jules or anybody with knowledge about Pioneer Motors. I tech at a club in Williamsburg, Virginia and one of our favorite classes is the Trans Am Class. The cars to beat are either Scaley or Pioneer and thus the question. Our new year rules will limit the car to an 18K motor either stock that came in the car or an H&R 18K motor that will be sold by and inscribed by the club. Now is where the Pioneer question comes about, I see that Pioneer sells two FC 130 motors one designated as 18K and the other either 20 or 21K and from the pictures of them the only difference I see is a sticker with the RPM designation. I understand that we can check the RPMs with a tach and we might be forced to do this, however, if there is a physical difference you can see on the motor I would appreciate knowing it.

I do believe that the non 18k motors have a smooth motor shaft and have screws holes on the non end bell ends.

The 18K TYPHOON motor evolved between 1st issue (September '09) and today. Currently we are on the MK5 version (2015 onwards). The specification of the motor is unchanged since 2013 and the only change from MK4 to MK5 is that the non-driving end of the shaft is now shorter. Main thing to look for if you want to be sure of the later type is that all the cans are bright nickel plated instead of the earlier silver sprayed type.

All TYPHOON motors have the rpm printed on the can. No stickers.

What are you concerns with the speed? Someone may swap out the guts from a 21k into an 18k can?

Apart from the speed differential (which is actually quite small when geared down) there are a few small 'dark art' changes in the performance of the 18k vs. the 21k. I would say that the 18k suits small tracks using magnets but the 21k (for reasons other than straight speed) might suit wooden tracks better.

The 21k TYPHOON is at version MK2. It also now has a bright nickel plated can.

Docdoom: Both the 18k and the 21k come in smooth shaft and mild knurled (splined) variants. Dealers can order whatever type they prefer as an aftermarket unit.
