If you have an adjustable power supply the ultimate solution is to dump the set type wiring and connect directly to the track. You would have to build or buy controller hookups and you would have to either add alligator clips to the set controllers or buy aftermarket controllers.
Sets come with small power supplies, the are good for an amp at most. If something goes wrong there will not be enough power available to do much damage. If you use an aftermarket power supply with plenty of amps available you can burn up a controller, a car motor, the track wiring or even damage the track itself if you don't include the correct fuses or circuit breakers.
