motor question, what is it?

I just got a used Maurice Carter Camaro from the bay (Hornby sidewinder). It was supposed to be stock but the minute I put it on the track this thing flew!!

I took it apart and found something I have never seen; The motor fits in the standard motor position for these cars but is a shiny black can with black brush housing. The rpm's are off the chart compared to anything else I have other than commercial raceway motors.

Anybody have any idea what motor this is? Anybody want to trade for a stock motor? This thing just runs circles around everything other Hornby Camaro and Mustang I have so it can't be used to race with the other cars.

Black on black...could be an MRRC or whatever they are called these days(SRP?)

I jut found it online. I never knew that scalextric did competition motors. It is a 30,000 rpm competition motor. No wonder it flies like it does when the stock motor is an 18,000 rpm motor.

You too? :lol: I just picked up a used #19 U of Pitts. car from a private sale that does the same thing. When I opened it up it had an orange end bell in it. :o

Hey Randy,
That's interesting. I wonder why the swaps? the original 18,000 rpm motor has always been a good, solid motor in all my other Camaros and scalextric cars in general. This car with the black motor is so fast I can't imagine where you get the use out of it other than a long commercial track but the car isn't really set up for that; magnets and original tires are still on and unsanded or cared for.
Probably because it was so fast it is missing the rear spoiler and the front is cracked. Now I need to source those.

VenturaAlfa, I race in two clubs that allow the Slot It Orange End bell for the class. That motor is a little faster but manageable in the Camaro. The only drawback I have found that the added torque and rpm will expose any weakness in the car such as Plastic Rear Wheels and you are right, breakage will increase. There are several places that sell parts for your Camaro, one of them being Electric Dreams. Good luck and good racing with your rodded up Camaro.

Anytime you buy a car that is used, it's called "Pot Luck" on the motor. The previous owner had a reason for putting the motor in the car that he did. Remember, it was his car at the time. Just one of the issues with buying slot cars online.

Yes, I realize it's pot luck :lol: . I was not complaining about the motor just trying to figure out what it is. (I now Know it's a 30,000 rpm scalextric). Good motors and yes, certain people set them up for certain reasons. In the last post I was more wondering about what the reason would be for a motor that powerful. The car is not set up for a commercial length track and it's too much motor for a 72 foot home track with long straights so I was just curious about who would use it and why. It really flies around my track and if I was looking for a car for just pure speed and not to race with other cars I would probably leave it the way I bought it.

The car was a great deal and I'm very happy with it for the price. The seller obviously did not know what he had. The motor alone is worth what I paid for the car.

This is getting very interesting indeed, as mine came with a spare Maurice Carter body and a very badly beaten Sunoco body. My tires were also in the same condition as yours. I put a set of soft Pioneer tires on it this afternoon, now it picks the guide out of the slot when you pin it off the line. :lol:
