As Jeremy said, this came up before. I think one of the major contributors was Dan Dyke. In general, what has been reported is that motors intended for robotics usually are fine for slot cars, but there are some that are useless (all torque, no rpms). Toothbrush motors seem to always work (even though they are definitely always battery powered, and would be expected to burn up), yet Todd has found one that doesn't, vibrator motors from game console controllers would be fine but the little off-center weight is welded on, ruining any chance to use them, old style electronics fan motors work but aren't very fast, and so on.
