Tamiya R/C motors

Does anyone know if these R/C motors are viable for 1/32 basement racing?
I know nothing about R/C, so I don't know what sort of voltages they're wound for. So, at 12 volts: Too quick or not quick enough? Low torque or too much? Brakes - good, fair, non-existant? Reliable or grenades? :scared-eek:

They let the smoke out easily. They are made to run on 2-AA cells.

It depends on the motor. Like Foamy said, they are designed for low voltage although that isn't necessarily a killer. I use the long can, Colgate Motion toothbrush motors on some of my cars around here. They ran on two AA batteries in the toothbrushes they came in. Robert Livingston tested them at 20,000 rpm @ 12v on his dynometer. But toothbrushes by design run at fairly slow speeds compared to RC cars. That is where the difference will probably lay. You will just have to try one of those motors to see if it works or not. You may find that a cheap toothbrush motor will fit your application better.

I picked up a couple of those Colgate motors. Robert was practically spot-on re: rpms. One day I'll use them someplace and see how the braking is.
I found a site that sells the Tamiya cans, and they provide factory specifications. Yup, good motors for drag racing perhaps, but don't think they'd last too many laps. :lol:

I can speak from experience that the "Luminant" toothbrushes from the dollar store won't live long in the slot world - but have heard that there are tracks running classes based of the Colgate Motion toothbrush motors...

As Jeremy said, this came up before. I think one of the major contributors was Dan Dyke. In general, what has been reported is that motors intended for robotics usually are fine for slot cars, but there are some that are useless (all torque, no rpms). Toothbrush motors seem to always work (even though they are definitely always battery powered, and would be expected to burn up), yet Todd has found one that doesn't, vibrator motors from game console controllers would be fine but the little off-center weight is welded on, ruining any chance to use them, old style electronics fan motors work but aren't very fast, and so on.
