Of dialing down NSRs with 18k motors - and other things...

So, speaking of NSRs - has anybody installed lower power motors like the 18k style in theirs? I'm just trying to get a feel for a percentage of peeps who do it.

My track, these things are slamming at 10v, too much so…I know the General's husband likes to put 18k motors in the Slot.it GT40s and many other higher power vehicles also. I actually just did this to my new Slot.it GT40 & I do like it like that.
The NSRs though…at 9v they are big, big fun on my track. At 10, too much though - at this gearing anyway. I'm considering sticking in a lower power motor but something about tearing into these things gives me pause because they are so dialed in although a little too quick on my track at 10v. I'm thinking okay…I'm just going to leave all NSRs as is and dial it down to 9v just for these…but then again I want to try them with an 18k motor. Thoughts?

I put the H&R Hawk Motor-18k in my corvette with the stock gearing and it flies on the SCC track, handles great like the car was made for it.

I am getting ready to re-motor my Racer "Group 5/IMSA" series again as I have a couple new ones to do. I never bothered with the NSR models as the Slot.it models are just as good and cost less :)
All of my classic series (sidewinder) Slot.it's have the Hawk. (GT40, Chappy, McLaren, etc).

I agree with the others on the 18k Hawk and it has the same sort of feel as the Shark motor allbeit on a lesser scale. Another option may be worth considering is going from an 11 tooth to a 12 tooth pinion with the standard spur. It tames them quite a bit and they might be more suited to running at 10v that way, although still not going to be slow. Gotta be one of the best, if not the best, 20k motors out there.

Funny you should mention that ac.
NSR sell a motor called the babyking which is used in a lot of the NSR classes in Europe. It is 17k.
The price of it is like buying a few hawks or MT or similar 18 k motors out there.
Afew years ago I boughta bunch of the old BWA motors from Al Penrose and replaced the Slotit 21.5s in my Lemans cars.
On my then small track I had more fun, more realistic and still competitive.
So I guess I am a proponent of lower powered motors, as the race is in the competitive level still.
Our club has quite a few low power motor classes using BWA, Ninco NC1 or Low power slimlines and the racing is every bit as exciting as the rocketships.

First, how does one replace an NSR angle winder motor with a Hawk? Being different motor series, do you use an adapter on the Hawk or use screws to hold it in place.

Second, my NSR Corvette is simply uncontrollable on my small track. The NSR rally Porsche has the same motor but a larger pinion (by one tooth?) and drives completely different.
I'll be ordering that pinion on my next parts order.

The Hawk would be for a sidewinder NSR pod. For the NSR inline or anglewinder you would want an M/T-5, or a Ninco long can. Beware with the Nincos you could go too low, as the RPM listed on them is @14.8v. I have an NC-14 Speeder + Ninco in my hand that says 20600 RPM, but it would be maybe 15 or 16K at 10 volts.

I need to order some Hawks, I got in there...one thing I'm convinced of is that the rear axle on this one NSR GT40 was rubbing up against the motor that has a paper wrapping on it - I removed that. I don't have definite proof except psychologically it feels better now that I removed the paper. The tolerance & room for error there is pretty tight, it's very close man. I can't really see light between the motor casing & rear axle. I know there's a thread about NSR motors in Slot.it pods and it being very tight but I dunno. Anyway I had some motors laying around but the only ones that had the pinion at the correct end were way slow. I don't even know what they came out of. Hawks order coming up. Thanks for the advice y'all.

We race on wood tracks at 10 or 10.5 volts for the most part. At Area 51, which is a 130 foot 5 lane track, we have used 12 volts. For sidewinder cars we use Slot.it 21.5K or Piranha motors. 12 or 13 tooth pinion gears are preferred.

Yes, some motor cans are slightly different in shape and size.

And yes, you are correct. Sometimes even the wrapper or the painted cans can be a close call in these cars.

On my sidewinder installs, I sanded the edge of the can to remove the paint. Then a hand file to make sure it was not rubbing the axle.

Use some tape to cover the can openings to help prevent any metal particles from getting inside.

My track has long enough straights and wide enough turns that a 21.5k rpm motor at 11v. is controllable. Many of my cars that take a FC130 motor are getting remotored with the Piranha unit. Some of my cars like the MRRC Toyota had a really hot motor and they have been replaced with the Piranha. I am also slowly replacing some of my anglewinders with slower units.

I've put Hawk motors in a couple of slot it GT40s and a Racer Maserati 450 to meet the specs for our Classic sports car class and have found they make the cars very drivable.

H&R Hawk motor is great.

I have a philosophy when it comes to slot cars . . . . . they make me happy. If I'm not having FUN, why bother?
