Racer Porsche 356

Looks like a new version of this favorite is coming possiblky this year.

It will be in the Silverline series, so the pricetag might put off many of you.

Still interesting to see it being done. I honestly cannot figure out why no one else has done this model before now.

Yes, I have that model. Many moons ago :) Hard to come by and pricey.

The Silverline version will be pricey for most...but it will be fully loaded with high quality gear.

As I watch companies literally releasing the same models this year, I asked myself why not this car?

Will be interesting to watch.

From Racer: "Starting with the brand new 512S long tail, Racer will later introduce as Silver Line, the 206S spider version, which was eagerly requested by Racer collectors. By the end of the year they also planned to release another iconic car model, 512M.

In the Silver Line serries they are also working on a Porsche 356 hopefully also to be released within 2015

Production will also include reliveries of theMaserati 450S as well as Porsche 911s."

You do get what you pay for though. A lot of manufactures out there give you a great looking car or a great running car, but the Silverline cars are both right out of the box. They have all that you need to get the car running like butter on a hot skillet without having to spend a dime on after-market parts. Consider what you may have spent on a good looking car in the past, then factor in the parts needed to get that car running smoothly, plus the time taken to get it that way, and then the SIlverline becomes much more reasonable.

I'm not advocating only buying Racers, but I do believe that they are worth their asking price when one considers all that's gone in to the car on both the detail-work and mechanical sides. Like eating at a fancy restaurant, most of us can't afford to do it every day, but it's fun to splurge from time to time, and it's not something that you're likely to regret.

The question I have in my mind when I see anything by Racer is...scale. I believe there Maserati was oversize but the Datsun 240 I saw looked about right. Anybody care to comment on that?

The Racer resin cars seem to be consistently too wide. No problem if you don't care about that, it certainly makes them more driver friendly.
I love the 356, and look forward to a Racer version. I agree with Harry - it's hard to understand why no one except Ninco has done it. I don't expect the Racer 356 to be more scale-like in proportions than the Ninco model though.
Below are 3 photos with comparisons of the widths of Racer bodies aginst Fly (250LM), and Proto Slot (275GTB). I must admit, having compared these models IRL, the Racers look clumsy. I prefer the Fly & the Proto versions, but it's a matter of opinion. If a 356 from Racer arrives I will certainly buy it.

Just out of curiosity, is the Ferrari a 206S or 206SP. The photo you show is the SP, the body
style I prefer. The 206S is front engined with a Scaglietti body similar to the 250 Testa Rossa.
Just planning ahead.

Thanks Goosenapper and Balsaworks, you have both made me think about "Racer" things in more depth.

It has become pretty much common knowledge that the entire Racer line is closer to 1/30th scale and is now advertised as such. They are still the finest looking slot cars out there and when displayed or raced against each other only the difference in scale isn't relevant.

It isn't just a matter of scale. Racer takes liberties with the proportions of their car models and make (at least several of) them wider, presumably to improve performance.
If you are very familiar with the shape of a particular car, such changes in proportions can be annoying. That is a matter of personal taste and opinion.

The discussion comes up every time Racer/Silverline announce a new model. But let's face it, very few slot cars are 'true scale models' of the real thing. Provided it has the spirit and beauty of the real car it's worth consideration to me if I can afford it. They do make 2 of my favourite Japanese cars with the Toyota GT2000 and the Datto 240Z. Had I been able to afford them I would've snaffled one of each for the collection. But that wasn't to be. The only Silverline car I have was the result of a long running bet with a friend.

But I must say, having handled a couple of true Racer cars, as distinct to the Silverline series, their finish and detailing is beautiful.
