The tires from the above Trumpeter Zil-157 Military 6x6 have the right tread pattern, but are too small in diameter at 30mm, drats!

What to do?

Order another Military kit with BIGGER tires, muhaaa!

Ok, so I ordered another kit with hopefully larger tires and this just arrived. Krickey this little $9.96 Tamiya Unimog build is getting spendy…

Trumpeter 1/35 scale Russian BM-21 Grad Multiple Rocket Launcher should do the trick.

Now that I have the correct sneakers, I can get this Unimog build going.

Measuring up all items reveals some interesting imagery. The Tamiya cab is spot on for accuracy. What chucks it off in the scale looks department is the shortened bed. I'm going to try to not let my recent purchases go to waste and use as much as I can from these two Trumpeter 1/35 scale Military kits. First will be to lengthen the rear bed and then the chassis with driveshaft to the rear worm gear. Should be fun, stay tuned.

I'm going to forge ahead and build this both scale and working on the slot track as a cleaner.

One of the items I need to sort out is a proper motor. The kit supplied Tamiya looks to be a Mabuchi and runs off of two 1.5v AA batteries for a total of 3v, so doesn't looks like this will work on a Carrera track pumping 12v into it!

Is there a similar size motor that will work for this build at 12-14v range, running on a standard Carrera track?
And if so, would this motor stand to be run at low rpms?

Here are the sizes of the Tamiya kit motor.

Would it be worthwhile to use diodes to drop the input voltage? Might cost less than swapping motors (not that cost is a big issue). You can probably drop the voltage to 6 without really putting a big strain on the motor -- they can usually handle more than the stated rating.

I have two of the monster trucks, looks like the same motor, when I first put them together I swapped out the motor for a Carrera or Monogram( can't remember which but it was a direct fit ) but they were way too slow. This might be just what you need! Just so you know I put the stock motor back in and the grandsons pounded on them for about a year at 10 volts before one finally died!!!!!!

Cool stuff! I'd use the M/T-1 motor. At 14k I think it would be perfect and I know I can crawl mine around the layout if needed.
