I think a black/gold HRW edition works for me.

Back in the days of steamships, the steel plates that were at the very bottom of the hull, just covering the keel was called the keelson, and the void underneath, where all kinds of narty crap collected was the keelson locker (any closed space in a ship is a locker). They used to send newbies to find the key to the keelson locker, usually back and forth all over the ship, climbing to masthead, knocking on captain's cabin door, etc. Finally they would send him to the engine room, where a 200 pound spanner wrench would be given to him, and he took it to the sadist who had been torturing him. When he showed up, having accomplished his task, exhausted after days of constant hazing, dragging a wrench that has to have a hoist to operate it, he was seized by a mob of shipmates and taken to the mess. There are various versions of what happened there, but a great deal of the ship's rum stores were consumed and the new crewmember was "well in" from then on.

Waaytoo, my late Father (Retired Navy) used to tell the story about new recruits being sent to find "Charlie Noble" (smokestack on the galley).....the recruit would pop in someplace and the folks there: "just missed him, I think he's on his way to...." finally some kind soul would take pity and fill the poor youth in. In the Air Force it was buckets of propwash or lengths of flightline.

What, no skyhooks?

I can remember whenever we had a "Security Alert" which was signaled by a loud claxon, if you had a noob - we call them "jeeps", we would simply yell "RUN" and sit back and have a great laugh. Yep, it was fun.
