In hunting through google some more, it turns out that there is a fourth variant of the Darrell Waltrip car. (the other three are on page one) This is in fact the car that I am working on, the main difference being the number font and a white strip going up the hood:
Image

And so I decided to wipe some mayonnaise on the hood of the Cyclone:
Image

I can afford to be messy with this coat as the only edges that you'll end up seeing are the straight vertical lines on the sides of the front fenders. The rest will be covered up with the brown coat, to be applied after this one cures in a couple of days. The build continues, slowly...

I'm getting the feeling that I'm making this a lot more difficult than it needs to be.

Goose, it is looking good to me. I want to use your research to produce a suitable decal set for the 95 car.

I am putting the new grill in to the old prototypes I painted months ago. I may be overthinking things a bit as well. But I just have to have lights in my D132 cars.

The Pioneer chassis shown has the black wheels but I hit them with a Molotov to chrome them up a bit. A simple trimming and hot glue. I know it sounds ridiculous to hot glue a chassis in place but it works and is simple.

Been running some laps with the Pioneer chassis and once it gets worn in a bit it runs very snappy.

About a dozen years ago when I started building cars for my oval, I bought a bunch of Carrera spare parts including axle sets from vintage NASCARS such as on this Dodge Charger (from Harry's review).
Image

I went through a parts bin and only one front axle set remains unused. The wheels are the same steel grey color and it has treaded Goodyear ties. But, they are larger in diameter than the Pioneer Charger wheels and tires. The rear axles are for inline chassis and were used on Artin and Revell Corvette chassis. I also found several unopened bags with 2 pair of new tires in each. (Waay if you have a use for these let me know, I can spare 2 bags and never miss them.)

During my search I found a rear axle harvested from an SCX NASCAR with fat silicone tires on it and it fit in the Pioneer Charger chassis. A quick test on the oval was encouraging so this is what I'll be using. The rear wheels are a mismatch with the 5 spoke Pioneer wheels up front but I'll worry about that later. The same SCX axle sets are on a car not currently in use, so they will likely get harvested for the second Cyclone. That will leave a RMS Cougar body without running gear meaning it will haunt me till I build a chassis for that. The fun never ends.

Those are looking good , for the one that I have , I plan on doing a street version . Was lucky enough to get a few Pioneer Chargers off of the Bay , they were the Dukes of Hazard , and since I had two of the same car I took one for the chassis . Now comes the fun part , which is mounting them together to get a smooth running car . Not so sure about color as of yet .

Randy, my spares from the kit look pretty damned good. I can do a quick chrome paint on the bullseye and send them to you if you like, or I'll send them bare.

Slothead, I want them! I hoard and store all kinds of good stuff and over the years, the airtight storage I use has been a big help with lots of stuff. Oh, and some of the SCX NASCAR units had a "braking" unit on the rear axle. With a little work they were effective, so you might keep an eye out for those. I never had any of those, but I learned a lot about them from Harry & Co. Dave Kennedy probably knows a lot about them, too.

Over on the 'Mold' thread I asked to have the pieces on this black sprue identified. Thought this should be here too.

May get more pre-assembly done today, starting with work on the interior and test fitting the race grille.

Happy 4th of July!

PM sent on the grill. This keeps getting better and better :) I am impressed that you have taken on this project and finished it with the quality that this kit has. The fact that it is plastic is great. It's still hard to fathom that this came from someone at home, and is as good or better quality than some of the commercial kits I have purchased.
Well done!

Here's a wild one. To remove all traces of the mold release film, I used the old whitewall tire cleaner (Westley's Bleche-Wite), that I have been using on resin bodies for 20 years or so (I don't remember).

Get this! I happened to be washing the body in a white sink, and the Bleche-Wite spray dripped off the body in the exact same shade of blue as the body! I think it acts as an etching solution, which is great for these bodies! The two mist coats of white primer afterward went on perfectly, no flaws at all. I am sorry that I am so behind in telling you guys this- I hope you aren't too far ahead of me to use this info.

In a matter of minutes, the stupid host has trashed the previous post. This is me bringing it up again for those of us building these cars.

Harry has no control over this weird stuff. It has been going on for years.

Waay - three packages (6 pair) of Carrera stock car tires were put in the mail to you today. I included a pair of 1:24 silicone over foam tires and some larger 1:24 tires. Got them from Professor Motor years ago thinking they were 1:32. Hope you have use for all the stuff.

You scared me when you said the Cyclone was bleeding blue after washing it, I thought you were going to tell us it disintegrated. I made a new rear body mount out of balsa wood tonight and worked on the stance. I'm still using the included front body mount part but need to Dremel it more to get the front of the chassis up into the front of the fenders. I already removed a fair amount of plastic from the front hood brace, top and bottom, to get the hood to fit nicely.

The tab on the rear of the interior tray needs to be shortened so it doesn't interfere with the rear body mount. I'm going to wait till I get a new interior tray before making the cut so I have a backup if I botch it. If anyone else has done interior work let us know. While I have access to the interior tray I should add a roll cage. As for the driver, no way I could paint the parts provided to look even remotely human, so I may see if I have something else I can cut down to size and put in the car. Whatever happened to all the toy soldiers I had as a kid?

It's a fun build. Going slow on purpose to do it my way and learn so the 2nd one goes together smoothly. Not going to think about painting till all the parts fit together and the body and chassis mate up nicely.

Main painting of the body is complete:
Image
Masking prior to the brown coat was a PITA, taking over two hours alone. Overall, it came out ok. It's not perfect, but as the b&w image above shows, even the original car had paint runs on the front-end, so I'm going to try to convince myself to accept it as-is and move on to detail-work. I have a lot of plans for details for this car, as the realm of the superfluous is where I firmly reside. It may be a bit before the next update as at this point the only things that lay ahead is painting the trim, final assembly, and the application of pretty bits that will fly off the first time the car deslots.
