Goose, you can get 1/64 inch white pin stripe tape to sharpen the edges like you wouldn't believe. I discovered this stuff on the first Smokey car I did, between the gold and the black. That tiny red stripe really made that paint job. It also bends around curves like a noodle. After the car is completely finished, any kind of clear coat will anchor it great. If you have trouble finding it, I'm sure I can get you an online source.

The balsa wood rear body mount I made has been installed on the body using permanent double sided foam tape. It's firmly attached but still has some flex due to the tape. Next, I want to make some foam donuts from craft foam to use as washers between the body mount and chassis. The donuts will compress as the screws tighten allowing some flex and also a range of tightness of connection between chassis and body.

I also need to look for some 1/8" plastic tubing for use in designing a roll cage. I'll keep it simple with a main hoop from left to right just behind the driver's seat and two side hoops going from front to back. I can mock something up now but won't be able to finalize it till I trim the interior and fit it in place. The roll cage will almost touch the roof but not be connected to it. That will also mean not doing final placement till after the car is painted and the windows installed so I know the final clearance.

Sometimes I'd try to build a car in a day, or a weekend. I'm glad that isn't the case with this project and things are going slowly. I guess that's because now that I'm retired what doesn't get done on a Sunday can be resumed on Monday, and so on.

Look at the big tires on that #03 - doesn't make those Carrera tires look so big after all! On the other wide, as much as I love my Monogram stockers too, I also thought they were too small (bigger tires would have helped with the axle gear rub problem, too!)

Is that #03 an ARCA or USAC car, or a Cup car?

Call Alray Tires, Lenoir, North Carolina. I bet they have that picture on their wall.

I've been working on the chassis, body mounts, and stance as well as filing and prefitting body parts. When it comes to putting the body parts together, what's being used for the glue?

Also, can someone show how they put the front and rear body parts together? What goes behind the racing grille to hold and support it?

Thanks.

Look at the front bumper assembly. The bumps there hold the back of the grill in perfect position.

I think I read somewhere on proxieken's Cyclone thread that he used polystyrene to make the bodies. If this is the case then model glues like Humbrol and Airfix etc should virtually weld the parts together rather than bonding them.

Yes, they are high impact polystyrene. I use Testors model glue and had to destroy a hood to get it back off a body after it had set. On bare plastic that stuff is amazing.

For parts that are painted I use just some generic adhesive like Goose suggested.

The grill does set upon the bumper and rest against those bumps.

One thing I should mention is the random ejector pin posts. These are not part of the model and are a side effect of my re-usable die assembly. The pins are loose and really not easy to get the correct height. I snip them off with sprue cutters.

I am actually thinking about building some and posting them on ebay. If not I am going to wind up with a series of IROC racing using Cyclones...............

Ken - I got the spare parts you sent, thanks.

Thanks to everyone for feedback on glue. Even though I have most of the parts prefit nicely, I'm nervous about gluing them in place. Mostly the hood 'cause I got it to fit nice and don't want to botch it and have it be uneven. Fat fingers and detail work don't always go well together.

I'm still not sure if I want to paint the parts separately or glue it together and paint the whole body (minus grille and bumpers). I'm thinking of painting the hood a different color and am imagining what the #21 would look like with a red hood. Or maybe some sort of red stripe.

Whattaya know...learn something new every day. I always associated Tommy Gale with a red and gold #64 associated with Elmo Langley, but he didn't start driving for him until 1975.

Another curiosity is that in the 1969 Daytona 500 Gale drove a #76 Torino - wonder if it looks like the one Carerra just released?

I wonder if the "Almay Tire Center" will be stupified by the sudden interest in their business all of a sudden? Maybe we should all make a pilgrimage...

Things get even curiouser on the Tommy Gale connection to the Carrera Torino just released. According to racing-reference, it appears that Tommy Gale raced that #76 car into the 69 Daytona field in Qualifier 2, and then the owner handed the keys to Ben Arnold, who DNF'd. Tommy Gale was relatively more famous driver to associate with that car, but it was only for that one race.
