How Do You Arrange Cars On Your Shelves?

Postby pgtr » Sun Mar 22, 2015 8:00 am

There's LOTS of options here ranging from randomly tossing them on a shelf to making them all face the same direction to grouping them by age, era, brand, etc. etc. etc...

So how do you 'arrange' your cars on your shelves?

I keep the collectable one offs and low mintage on the top shelf above my computer center, and the ones I run occasionally in the mirror backed cases above the race track, and the ones I race all the time on the in field on the track.

Count me in as a random tosser. Or should I say semi random. I actually keep most of them corralled into general categories.

I keep the cars in large plastic storage bins. I think they are 8 gallon sized. They are non-marring, so I can keep them on their sides to keep from flat-spotting tires. I learned that one the hard way when I had a box full of rear tires to replace. They are air-tight, too, and stackable. I think there are 22 of them now, and they work great with two layers each. The tubs are translucent, so I can see what's in the box at a glance. For the most part, I group them by what era races together, but there is a Ferrari box, a Mustang box, a Camaro box, a Jaguar box, a Ford GT box, etc.

I used to group them by manufacturer, so there were several Fly boxes, Scaley boxes, etc, but eventually the collection grew too much to make that feasible, and then several manufacturers dropped out. My own scratchbuilds were together, but now they are mixed in with everything else. The few 1/25ths I have left are in separate tubs and are 100% scratchbuilt modifieds and a few trucks and they fit in two layers, too.

I have an old lingerie chest and keep my cars roughly by type in the different drawers. I have a couple empty slots left, then I'll have to look for more furniture!

There are over 900, so organization is very important. I organize them by the number of tires on the car.

I arrange them by manufacturer first, then brand, then model and finally racing number.
Ex. Fly-Ford-GT40-#

I used to do it by manufacturers model number but that was too much work.

Here is my temporary solution. Took over a closet until we build a family and hobby room.

I like to arrange by manufacturer and/or type of vehicle:

Top Shelf is Scalextric dominated by Lotus 49
Scalextric/Ninco JGTC
Group 4/5 (Sideways + Fly M1)
Scalextric V8
Cartrix
SLot.It x2 shelves

then the next row has

Fly Porsche 917k
Fly Lola T70
Ninco Classics
Muscle Cars x2
Ninco Karts/F1 GTR
Scalextric GT40 / Mini

Another couple of sections to show at a later time :)
