Thinking about switching to Revell track

Postby Valvarez » Sun Mar 29, 2015 2:33 pm

Over the last few years I’ve acquired many 1:32 Scalextric sets, cars, and accessories. I like it, but I am intrigued by the many testimonials I’ve read here and elsewhere about the old Revell track system. I like the modern features on Scalextrix - digital lane changing, App control with the Arc system, etc. - but I’m not married to it. At the end of the day I prefer analog racing and I’m also fond of old tech and craftsmanship. And I like the Revell banked curves I have enough space in my home for a 4 x 12 table. Ideally, I’d like to build a 4-lane track on a 4 x 12 table with computer lap counting. I don’t mind the hassle of selling off my Scalextric track and hunting down old Revell track to replace it.
But I don’t want to go through all that trouble only to discover that the Revell track is no better (or worse) than the Scalextric I already have.
Any advice?
Thanks.

Revel has a wider foot print than Scally, but Carrera has the widest.

Revel is a great track but its getting old

the guide depth on Revel is not as deep as Carrera

If I was not going to route a track I would go with Carrera,The options you can get from Carrera you could never get with the older tracks

This just my feelings heck you can bet if you had a revel track near any of us we would race on it, let us know what you decide

Thanks for the quick and helpful responses. I noticed no one weighed in on the quality of Scalextric. No one suggested I should keep what I already have. If plastic tracks are mostly the same, and I'm not handy enough to rout my own track, should I just stick with what I have?
Sylvain - I like the look of your Artin track. Thanks for posting. Do you find it a better track to race than others?
RazorJon - I like the Carrera track I've used – it looks sharp and the banked turns are great – but they seem more expensive compared to other brands and the tabs are brittle.
old Johnny - I don't think I have the skills to rout my own track.
mattb - thanks for the link

Nothing wrong at all with what you have.

Revell is harder plastic like Carrera. Brittle? Well, sure they will break if you push them too far.
Assembly is easy and I have made dozens of layouts with Carrera and never broke a tab.

But back to the question...I would stick with what you have compared to Revell, especially when looking at a 4 x12 footprint and 4 lanes. The cars are not going to run any better and getting more track, borders, etc is much easier.

Thanks, Harry.
I appreciate your opinion.
With Revell out of the equation, do you think it's worth it to sell my Scalextric track and replace it with Carrera?
I think I like the hard plastic track systems better compared to the flexible Scalextric track.

I do prefer Carrera, but if space is limited then what you have is just fine.

I built mine out of old Strombecker because that was what had been sitting in the box. I love the track, but like most older tracks you are limited in radius options so it is hard to build a 4 lane track. After running on some routed tracks, and after my wife ran on them we decided that we want to route one ourselves chiefly because they are so much quieter than the plastic.

Hi
when i decided to get a layout in a 1/32 scale first, i tried Ninco, then old Strombecker and Carrera and Artin,
i had in mind to keep the one who has banked tracks , look like most what i used to have in Ho and then 4 lane with independant transfo, after test, i kept the Artin because is was the cheapest and i could have what i needed, it was analog, and of course i upgrade a few things, i was register to the other HRW, i could read a lot of things about Artin and i used a few tips, i guess you can swich back to analog without any problem...
Artin only has R1 banked, scaley has, i think R2 banked, you should not have the same problem as i did...
and one thing the depth between the metal rail are quite large so a Parma guide could fit in it, my cars could race on Artin even routed track without mod

I was going to say that I would of stayed with Scally rather than switching to Revel but I did not want to be pushy lol

I have a 175 foot 4 lane Carrera and have busted a few tabs but in 8 years of racing they have not been missed

Wood track is easy to do if you can get your hands on a router try a small 1 lane slop track I got tape you can have and would be happy to send it to you

I am truly humbled by the decency and generosity from all of you. It reaffirms my reasons for getting back into this hobby. I first got into slot cars when I was a kid in the early 80s - Tyco Magnum 440s and such. I got back into it a few years ago out of my own nostalgia and to find a hobby I can share with my kids - 5 and 7 - that involves using your hands, learning a little math and engineering, and sometimes) being patient. They love it. (Just don't tell my son that his big sister is the better driver.)
I think I'll stick with the Scalextric track I have and make a 2-lane track on a 4 x 16 space. (I built three 4 x 8 tables. One is for my HO set, the other two are for the 4 x 16 1:32 track.) One day I'll look into wood tracks.
I'll post pics as I get it together.
Many thanks for all the advice and kindness. If you're ever in the Rhode Island area, please look me up.

I think you have come to a decision but if I hope you won't mind me making an additional comment. Yes Carrera does take up more room than Scaley but the width of Carrera raceway is something you don't appreciate until you go back to the alleyway that is Scalextric. I would prefer a less complicated Carrera layout to a maze of Scaley with R1's.
