david's got me thinking

David's posts about the wedding party's gathering at his place for slot car fun got to me. Not that I have that big a soft spot for weddings, etc, (actually, I really do), but one of the pictures showed a Carrera Bentley Speed 8. Now I have to say, I love that car. I have two of them, and I have done everything but build a new chassis for them, and they never have performed the way other Carrera LMP1 cars have. There's just something about that car. I haven't had the car out of the box in years, and I just wondered if anyone out there (including David), has succeeded where I failed? I mean, I wouldn't have that car out for guests because its too hard to drive and not so fast. I don't think David would either, based on how many cars he and I have in common on our favorites list.

Time to get it back out? How about a wheel truing session? New PG's?

You know... I didn't have either one of those when I gave up last time! Thanks.

I turned the wheels and used my previous favorite tires, ran the gears in (not a big project on near perfect Carrera smooth gears), tightened up the bearings all around and shimmed the slop on the axles, and there was almost no improvement, so maybe doing something I couldn't do back then is the ticket.

Love the looks of the Bentley.
Hate driving the stock Bentley. Think it needs a pod and rear end work. I have a D3D pod.......some decent wheels and tires should make it reasonable, I would think.
I dump the Carrera motor too.....the old ones have no brakes and that doesn't work well for no-mag racing.
Although to be fair - David runs no-mag no-brake so what do I know?

Rob - that should worry you...

I did NOTHING special to the Bentley other than PG tires. I trued up the wheels, mounted the tires, ran in the gears and that is it. Easy to slide and drive. I could actually get within about .2 seconds of dad in the Slot.it on my track with it last night. Had an absolute blast.

Oops. It must be the surface paint. Every one of them I have seen is a bear to control, including both of mine.

Both versions of the PDR have had excellent grip and were both painted with the same paint, so you may be on to something. The Audi handles exactly the same.
