While perusing online auctions,I frequently run across the word "rare". Is anyone else sick of seeing this word used in the description? Maybe it's rare because because it was so crappy, nobody wanted one. I don't know. I'm positive there are quality collectible models out there,so they should be sold on there own merits, yes?

Agreed !!!
My belief, in most descriptions, "rare" is a way to increase the auction price.

It also gets the attention of unknowledgable collectors and newbies..
So what do we do to rein in the sellers.
Post a question on the sale as to what makes it rare.
I just saw one where a chap was advertisingna very rare care he got 20 yrs ago from a reputable retailer.
The retailer stated he never ever had one to sell in the first place.
Lots of games going on, so I like doing my deals on HRW with people I know and trust.
But thats just my opinion.

Maybe I'm just on my man period, just had to vent a bit. If it's so rare, ask yourself why and do some research. But,if it's something you want and think it's worth it,then buy it and enjoy it

Ever notice how many hits you get with "rare vintage one-of-a-kind"? People are stupid, and there's just no way around it. I've seen "vintage" applied to slot cars that are not even close to old, and still in many stores online at a discount lower than the resevre price some of these twits put out. What keeps coming back to me is a course I took in Criminal Psychology decades ago. The primary trait of the criminal mind is that their sociopathology tells them the ridiculous lie that they are smarter than everyone else, coupled with their lack of conscience, which makes criminal activity seem reasonable.
I knew a guy many years ago who stole from his employer all the time, saying that he wasn't paid enough so that made it okay. Complete sociopath. Never felt guilty for anything- ever. I wish I could tell you he was in jail today, but he stole an idea from another employer, organized an IPO to build a business he never intended to operate, and sold the idea, making him and his investors very rich men today.

It's the lack of conscience that gets me. How does the brain get wired in such a bizarre way.

If we knew that we could predict behavioral patterns of individuals.
In fairness, some sellers have no idea what they are selling and the value.
They price it high and sometimes open to offers, or too low which becomes todays bargain.
After a while on the place we dare not speak of,, you get familiar with certain sellers.
Its like postage on some . A $10.00 item with a$15.00 postage rate.
Buyer beware.

They are the same kind of people that misrepresent worn out used cars on the used car lot. I shop a lot on ebay and many times get a good laugh at the descriptions that many sellers have on what they are selling. When you are shopping be sure to know about what you are looking for and NEVER bid higher than what you know you can get an item for elsewhere and include the shipping cost in that number. Be patient and eventually you will find what you are looking for at a fair price.

That's pretty good advice. The truth is, these are slot cars and as such, they are worth what you, as a person who runs the cars, think they are worth, ridiculous collectors who run prices up aside.
Its also good advice to check what they want for "shipping and handling". I know a couple of Ebay people who charge more than double the postage and call it "handling", as though it is a huge sacrifice to carry a sold item to the damned P.O. or UPS.

"Rare', "LQQK!", "Only One Left", etc, etc. If you think it's rare do a little research online ( I know a site with lot's of helpful folks willing to answer questions   ). If it really is rare and you are a collector then you can find out before you buy. I buy my slot cars to run, I "collect" 1:18 diecast but even on those I stick with the lower priced ones.
The auction sites are full of scam artists just observe for a bit, they usually won't last too long or if they do they'll get a lower rating.
Bottom line...."Buyer beware"

It's "rare" to find one that really is. When I see outrageous shipping I just move on. I don't need anything that bad.

The other term that's really over used on EBay "Professionally Built ".This usually pertains to completed models of any type. And dioramas get really overrated by this lable. Some are really good looking pieces but most of them are haphazard, poorly thought out , pieces of junk.Just because you glue a vehicle, poorly painted figures, and crappy attempts at landscaping, vegitation, etc.....I'm far from a pro but most of this stuff is a joke !!!
LOOK! Very rare

Just wanted to let you know I will be parting with some RARE Fly classic tires. There is only ONE pair left and when they are gone, they are gone. These tires were some of the best tires Fly ever made 10 years ago. Of course today they are harder than Chinese Algebra, but the history they have is priceless. Here is YOUR chance to own a slice in time.
These unique, one of a kind tires were PROFESSIONALLY uninstalled from a hard to find Fly classic. Not many Fly classics around so that tells you how RARE.
