I had the great fortune to pick up a nearly complete Strommie 1/32 Lotus a while ago and with the help of the great decal makers at Indydecals, I was able to detail it pretty nicely. These aluminum chassied Lotus' are probably the running cars Strombecker ever made. They are also fairly hard to find so I was pretty happy to land a second one a few weeks ago for a good price. Now having a second lotus I didn't really want to duplicate the green livery and though inaccurate, I decided to go with one of my favorite liveries from the period, The "American Red Ball".


Again, the Indydecals are EXCELLANT and I highly recommend them.

Nicely done Paul!!.......As you mentioned, these were really nice little cars, and can be made to run very well indeed. I too have a soft spot for the "American Red Ball" livery, mainly because it was driven by Graham Hill, who was a childhood favorite of mine.......so.......not to diminish your great work, but, it my opinion, it would certainly look better with Grahams' helmet colors. ;)

Indycals makes a lot of nice decals and they are available in 1/43 1/32 or 1/24. I have used his decals for all the builds I've done. Hard to beat the Lotus 38 for a really beautiful Indy car.

I do have one question, though. The Red Ball special was called a Lola, I believe. Was it actually a Lotus body?
I think some of those cars were modified and raced under other names. I think I read that the Lotus was also modified to be the Coyote Ford that AJ raced.

Wrong car and all, I think the livery suits the model pretty well and I think they look great running the track together.

Thanks for clearing up the Lola/Lotus confusion I had. My Indy car facination include buying 4 Eldon 1/24 cars. 2 Lotus and 2 Watsons to go with the one Lotus I allready have. I think these will get scratchbuilt chassis. Like all good modelers, I started by painting the bodies and trying to decide what liveries to do. I have a Red Ball sheet Bruce Paterson made a long time back, so I painted one Lotus white. I did one green and yellow and I did one red and white. I figured for playing at home I didn't have to be 100% correct. Now I can do the Red Ball and not feel guilty!!! I'll put up some pix when I get the first car in running condition with whatever chassis I build.

The 1/32 Lotus might be a good casting project for one of you guys. Ought to be able to find a donor body somewhere and make a mold.

Thanks Chris, I really appreciate the info!!! Awesome picture too! I used to love listening to Jackie Stewart during those Wide World of Sports broadcasts in the 70's. Those were the days!

Okay, I did a bit of work on the driver. Looks a little closer to Mr. Hill now. I even tried to do justice to the "stache". LOL

You did a find job on getting the driver to look more like Mr. Hill
