Mounting PG tires

I'm devoting today to working on my Showdown chassis. While trying to mount the huge PG tires on the 15 x 11mm CBD rims my hand slipped an knocked a brass motor mount on the floor that I then stepped on and broke. So, now my chassis design will be a bit unorthodox which is fine, but I'm still stumped regarding getting the tires on the rims.

1) is there a trick to doing this? Warm the tires maybe so they are more flexible?

2) if you mount them when the wheels aren't on the axle can you still fit in the allen wrench afterwards? Or do you have to remove the tires to attach the wheels to the axle later?

With luck I'll have a rolling chassis by tonight.

Most guys are using some sort of glue to secure the tire to the wheel. Sally's Hard As Nails (SHAN) finger nail polish is a common glue that works with PG tires. With the axle out of the car, secure the wheel onto axle. Then coat the outside of the wheel with glue, then slip the tire on. If you're using the SHAN, you have a few minutes to move the tire around before the glue sets up, giving you time to get the tire where you want it.

Once the glue dries, take a toothpick or a small drill (or any other sharp pointed tool, but NOT your wrench!!) and poke a hole thru the tire where the setscrew is. Before you remove said toothpick, take a silver Sharpie marker, and make a line on the inner sidewall of the tire (similar to what drag racers do) where the toothpick is. With this mark, now you can easily find where the setscrew is whenever you have to install or remove the wheel.

A friend suggested using PVA (white woodworking glue) to mount the tyres - I have tried it and it works - takes longer to dry than clear nail polish and superglue but it is easier to remove the tyre when the time comes.

Well I am a Sally (hard as nails) fan. :violence-stickwhack:

The tires are still not that hard to peel off. And for my use, if I am removing a tire then it has seen it's day. If it tears coming off I don't mind.

I still use IC-2000 for gluing any tire to any wheel, but I'm definitely looking for a viable alternative. The nail polish treatment is what Paul Gage recommends for mounting his urethane tires to aluminum wheels.

Funny, I used to tie flies and the head cement of choice was always Sally Hanson's Hard as Nails (SHHAN)...........!

If the tire is that tight to the rim in my opinion no glue is needed. Try a little soapy water to help the tire slide over the rim.

I use automotive weather strip glue. It is made to hold rubber (and its variants) to metal and it works as advertised.

Funny thing that I noticed on my CBD wheels is that there is a groove on the outer rim showing where the set screw is. just thought would mention that.

Correct, all of them have this for that exact reason.

I'm not big on gluing my tires
But in some cases you have to
I use the Sally Hard as Nails if I have time
If I'm in the middle of racing super glue works fine
A little soapy water or spit will get that tire on
Sally's will help it slip on before it sets up

I never ever would have noticed that notch without knowing it was there. Even knowing it looks like the tiniest of scratches. Thanks for the heads up about that.

It was a struggle to get the tires on the wheels and I cannot imagine them ever slipping so I will not be gluing them on. In fact once I get the axle mounted and the wheels on I won't be taking anything apart again unless I absolutely have to.

This is an interesting topic. I've never glued a tire to a rim but you guys have me thinking that perhaps i should? I haven't noticed any of my tires slipping. Is it obvious, or do you have other ways of knowing, like improved lap times, etc?

My test is, if you can grasp the tires and spin them easily in opposite directions they are too loose and need gluing. Or if you are spinning them up to sand them and they expand out from the rim they need gluing. But if you have to stretch them and can barely get them onto the rims no gluing is needed. Also if you are using an 18k rpm or less motor it is doubtful that gluing the tires is needed
