Ah yes, the car that kept passing me last evening as the driver kept saying, "I really like this Fly"

Nice report, as always, Alwyn.

Cheers,

And those of you not familiar with Luf's Targa track: the following video of the North America Group 5 Proxy race gives a great view of the track and also what a 7.5 second lap looks like:

Nicely done! I wonder how it would have gone with two fresh out-of-box cars, though. The two Slot.it GT40 cars I have are quite different, and are responding better to different setups from each other. One took a lot of tweaking, one not so much.
Very informative and a good comparison between the two brands.

Note to self: don't send GT40 to next years Targa Florio proxy.

And apparently the newer Slot.It Gulf car #9 with revised chassis is a better OOTB performer than the earlier chassied #6 Gulf car

Great comparison which got me to thinking. Since my GT40's are all bone stock out of the box except for the Fly which I had to replace the brushes on. I placed them on the track and first difference I noticed was the Fly was smoother and easier to control than the Slotit. Upon inspection I did notice the Fly had wider rear tires, 0.460 to 0.395 and the Fly had taller tires which may have accounted to the fster lap times of 7.288 seconds to 7.473 seconds. Anyway thanks for the comparison and getting me to appreciate the Fly again for its speed and detail.

No, the biggest reason Targa qually times were slower was that I drove them for qualifying, They would have been right there had you driven the qualifying.

I find this interesting that the 18K Fly is faster than the 21K Slot.it. What is the gear ratio of both cars? I am currently building proxy cars and really want to know is the HRS chassis that much superior to stock a chassis. If so why? Pod?

I also notice little if any weight in the Fly car. What is the weight difference between the cars?

" So I ran the Fly at 12.2V and the Slot.it at 10.5V."

Different motors run at different voltages. Nonetheless, nice comparison.

I must have missed the voltage differences. Thanks for clarifying. I am trying to build a better proxy runner. When the DaVols Cup/Forums Cup started I was in the top 5 or 7. Happen to be among the all-stars. Now my cars only finish well on my home track it seems. Either I'm missing on gear or weight placement or there are just better builders today than we started in 2008. Rear wheel RPM wise my cars are right in line, so it has to be chassis setup. I haven't been competitive in any proxy (RAA, Group 5) where the big names play but I hope to get there. Thanks for the tips. Just saw that post today where CCC is running a stock Scaley Camaro chassis in an unlimited TA class and is running 5th behind HRS chassis'. Must be something to that HRS chassis.

Interesting comparison Alwyn.

I prefer like for like, as stock as possible with the same voltage to discern a true comparison. I'm a big fan of both actually.

I know a former club member here who had a Fly GT40 that was wicked fast...bone stock. I've never had luck getting any of my Fly GT40's anywhere close. Conversely, my stock Slot.it GT40 (dark blue Andretti livery) is my fastest LM Classic and loves to bully NSRs for their lunch money.

But I've tuned some stock Fly's, like the Porsche 906 and 908/3 they are only 1-2 tenths behind (5.7-5.8) that Slot.it GT40 (5.5-5.6) on a 53' track.

Those Fly cars are smoother to drive / control with their lower torque motors and would be right there vs some of the top proxy competition we've hosted - all running at 10v across the board.

I'm staring at a long tail 917 I think I'll tune next, just urethanes, a solid front axle and the usual minor basic tuning for a Fly a la Harry's articles....yep, should be good!

Cheers, eh!
