The trackmate system is great. I have had only one IR led burn out in almost four years.

Don't ask your brother, jk. He and Bob helped me with mine. I'm sure they would help you out too.

Just follow Harry's 'how-to' and you can't go wrong. I installed one on my track about two years ago and its really been a hoot. The grand-kids and I really get competitive with it trying to beat each others time and we only use it in the practice mode. The only problem I've had with it is waiting for the computer to boot up and run the program.

Smart Phone alternative to full computer timing systems

For anyone that is not doing full club racing, and is just looking for an accurate and simple 2 lane, analog, timing system, the new smart phone Apps and Base Stations are fantastic.
I am using the Scalextric ARC One system, with an old Apple Iphone 5, and it is fantastic. All you need is the Scalextric ARC One base station (it has the sensors built in) and any Android or Apple phone. The ARC One base station is linked to the smart phone via bluetooth and this replaces the full hardwired computer system and light bridge. The app is easy to load and the ARC One basestation is trivial to install.
If you have aftermarket controllers and Power supply, you can keep using these with your standard power base, by disabling the controller and power portion of the ARC One Base, thereby making the ARC One just a timing and pit system. You just open up the ARC One base and unplug the power connection on the motherboard. Details on how to do this are on the Scalextric website on their ARC One Forum.
The ARC One system provides cumulative lap time, and fastest lap time, for any specified number of laps. It has a pit feature, with fuel and tires. It also has "jumped start" feature so you know if a racer crosses the start line early. It also has practice and race modes. All accessed via a simple smart phone app. It is quite easy to setup and use, and adds a whole new dimension to slotting, if you have never had a timer.
These smart phone systems are worth considering if you are looking for a 2 lane timing system.

RvE, The only issue I found with ARC (I had the same setup as you) was any Scalextric cars that had blue guides wouldn't register. (Pickup lap counts)
However if I used some black tape or magic marker on the guide it fixed the issue.

Drilled the holes in the track today and installed the track sensors, very easy
Set up the bridge with infrared leds for overhead light source,
Built a table for the computer and set up the windows XP computer, not online
