Racer Sideways help

Postby Mayberryman » Wed Apr 13, 2016 6:01 pm

I have read the review on the Racer Sideways with much interest, I have two of the Racer Sideways Capris and to be honest I have not found a way to make them handle acceptably either in a mag or no mag configuration. I have thought from day one that the motor carrier was the weak link and have decided to install a Slot It angle winder pod for the flat six to see how the very different front mounting and one piece rear would work. Has anybody made this modification and if so how did it work. Harry since you did the review on the BMW do you think that the new Sideways mount would be the equal to the slot it one?

Well, I don't have the Slot.it pod so cannot say. I do know that I just outfitted the latest Pink Pig Porsche with the new Sideways pod and it works great.

I have the Porsche with the slot it 1.0 mm pod. I added some weight up front and gained tons of grip and less chatter in the rear with the slot it pod. I also screwed the motor in

My Capris have a bit of weight up front and the pod and motor hot glued. Its a rocket ship.
The new Sideways pods starting with latest release the BMW, has the new pod .
It is also available aftermarket from SCC and SCCC. Stiffer and no hop, just go.
For wood track I usually go pretty stiff on the pod , on plastic I loosen the body screws and the pod just a tad. I Always run no mag though. The thing with the Sideways cars is they can all be made competitive.

we run quite a few sideways grp5 cars in my club and also get a fair few in the grp5 proxy here in NZ
the betters ones tend to have the slot-it white sidewinder pod fitted
the old standard pod is way to flexible for wood track
you brace the motor to the bush carriers which helps a lot
a bit of weight up front and right in front of the motor and some on the outer sides works well

I find that the standard yellow flat 6 a bit to harsh with the torque
I find 21.5k slot-it, nsr 20k-22k motors are a good choice
have not tried the Piranha 21.5k as of yet but have heard from a couple of top tuners I know that it is also a very good motor to go for
going to try one in a scaleauto Merc SLS GT3

I have only tuned the Lancia Beta myself and that didn't require any modification
but I do think the Capri does but not sure on how much as I have only driven ones that others have tuned
if you want to keep it in a angle winder set up I would highly recommend fitting a NSR 19k spanish king
but not sure on if the interior will require modifying or not
an old club member that moved back to the USA awhile back had one set up like that and it was a turdo powered rocket ship
but it is worth setting them up as a sidewinder

My Sideways Capri has a Slot.It sidewinder pod and 21.5k orange end bell motor. It's the older no offset style pod for 19mm spur with the pinion and spur on the endbell side so I needed to modify the interior tray above the motor to have the necesary clearance with the body sitting nice and low. A 1mm ofset pod might negate the need to modify the tray. It also has 17x10 short hub Slot. Its with NSR Ultragrips and although it's not the fastest (in a straght line) Group 5 car I have it's the best handling and is a lot quicker than it was in standard angle winder trim. Now it weighs 80gm all up with 54gm over the back wheels. It was in in the proxy series Crockett mentioned and since then it's had a tune up and is going even better

The Capri is a great running car when setup properly. I haven't run into a Racer Sideways that couldn't be made into a great runner.

To determine what you should do to tune your Capri, you should tell,us what kind of track you are running on. Plastic or wood, if plastic what brand? What is the size of the track? What tires do you run on the track, silicon, rubber, urethane? Is the track fast with long straights and large radius turns or is it more technical with shorter straights and tight radius turns?

Regardless of the track your drive on:
1. Strip the car down to the chassis. Check the chassis on a set up block to make sure it is flat. If it isn't flat, bake the chassis. There are many online resources and video on how to do this.

2. Replace the Sideways motor pod with a Slot It anglewinder pod. If your driving style benefits from a lower center of gravity or if more magnetic downforce benefits you, get a 1.0 mm offset pod. If you prefer more tire in the rear go with. 0.5 mm or 0 offset pod. These pods should give you enough room so fit a wider rear wheel and tire combination. I like the Slot It 17.3x9.75 magnesium short hub wheel. The sideways wheel inserts will fit in these wheels.

3.Determine the best gear ratio. I like the Slot It 6.75 mm diameter pin ions compared to the 6.5 mm pinions. They are available in 11 and 12 tooth. Purchase a Slot It Ergal anglewinder gear. You can reuse the orignal axles.

4. Install the motor in the Slot It motor pod. Make sure you use the adapter for Flat six motors on the non drive side if the motor. If you want magnetic downforce make sure the motor opening is facing downwards. Place the motor as far down was possible and use the top motor screw holes in the pod to screw in the motor.

5. Generally I don't use a spacer between the anglewinder gear and the pod, but sometimes I will place a .005 or .010 spacer between the gear and pod. A trick to placing your pinion gear, I like to use the Slot It pinion press with the SP30 professional upgrade. Take an old axle and place the anglewinder gear at the very end of it and tighten the gear on it. Insert the axle into the pod. Use an anglewinder stopper on the other side of the pod to keep the axle in place. Install the pinion until the anglewinder gear and pinion mesh properly. Take out off the stopper, gear and axle from the pod.

6. Install the pod in the chassis. Use the 2 front and 2 rear screw holes. I run the screws 1/2- 1 turn loose. Generally I cut off the middle attachment arms. Install the axle in the pod and then the gear, stopper and spacers if indicated. Install wheels and tires and trial fit into body. I run the body 1/2-1 turn loose. Make sure the tires aren't rubbing against the body or pinion. Adjust accordingly.

7. Set up the front axle height. You need to choose your the tires before doing this, I like Slot it PT 15 Zero grip tires for the front axle. Also install and adjust your braid. Using the axle height adjustment screw holes use the appropriate length m2 grub screws. If running on plastic track set up the front axle so that the front tires are almost touching the track surface. Plastic track is a little bumpy and having a little space between the tire and track surface will help keep the car from coming out of the slot. Set up the bottom grub screws first to get the right height. Screw in the top grub screw so that the grub screw are barely touching the axle. Back out the top grub screws 1/2-1 turn. If running on wood track that is generally much smoother than plastic track set the top screws first so that when the guide is fully in the slot, the wheels are touching the track surface and the top screws are touching the axle. Then screw in the bottom grub screw so that the grub screws are barely touching the axel and the axle spins freely.

8. Oil, and lube up appropriately. Screw in the body. I run the body loose 1/2-1 turn.

9. Run the car. You will need to make adjustments by loosening and/or tightening the screws to fit your driving style. You may need to add a little weight depending on your track and driving style. It will take a little time. Have some patients and these cars will be some of your best performers.

Or you can leave it with the standard pod, and glue a tiny piece of thin styrene between the motor mount and the axle holder on the gear side. And a plastic brace on the non gear side between the motor mount and the axle holder. A lot cheaper than a slot it pod and I know it works.
A 10 cent fix, which has now been addressed with the new sideways pod.
Our club runs these as stock except for tires, and they are our fastest class ecen over the Slot it grp C.
There are a lot of options to get rid of that hop without spending a lot of money on parts.
