Driving the new Thunder Slot Lola T70

Postby Modlerbob » Sat Sep 10, 2016 10:06 am

I've had this new slot car for a couple of weeks now and I'm liking it more every time I put it on the track. I'm even satisfied for now with the stock NSR type rear rim/tire arrangement. It is so silky smooth and quiet. Maybe it's not going to be a collector car for the scale enthusiasts but there are plenty of accurate models that can adorn collector's shelves. But for a slot racing enthusiast who wants the best 1960s-70s GT car in 1/32 scale its going to be hard to beat. I just wish there were enough 1/32 racers here in central Florida to get a can-am racing series going.

Bob

Where did you get yours? I'm thinking of getting one to go with 3 Fly Lola T70's to do battle with Ford GT40's, Ferrari 512's, and Porsche 917's.

Since I'm not fond of having to tune a car first think out of the box, I've had enough of Fly cars and am happy to see this alternative.

Slot Car Corner sold me mine. Cloverleaf also has them. It really is in a different league than stock Fly classic GTs. But my Fly Lola with a 3D printed chassis and slot.it motor pod is competitive.

Thanks for the reply.

For my World Sportscar Series (LeMans & Sebring type GT cars) I have mostly Fly cars, 2 Scalextric cars (Ferrari P4 & Chaparral 2F), 3 Carerra cars (2 Cheetahs & a Porsche 917K), and one MRRC car (Chaparral 2F). They all perform about the same for simulated races I do based on recorded lap times (inverted starting order - top qualifier starts last).

For 2 full field (16 car) races so far the Carerra Porsche 917 and a Fly Porsche 917 LH have recorded victories. As one might expect, the field turns itself over as the race goes on (cars at the rear working their way forward) but the outcomes have not been predictable. As the 'season' progresses the starting order will be inverted based on finish order points, keeping it competitive (I hope). No car has made it from last to first in 53 laps yet, but it's been close.

It sounds like you think the Thunder Slot Lola T70 could slice through this field and dominate. Do you have lap times you could share for similar class cars so I can estimate how they might do in my series?

Thanks for the conversation Bob, I love this stuff.

Nice post Bob.
I put the 2 rear chassis pod screws in mine this morning, and although it stiffened the chassis somewhat, i am convinced it needs som more stiffening.
The area available is fairly open so i dont think it would be too difficult to accomplish.
I usually use some dabs pf hotglue and styrene to start off so it can be easily removed if misplaced, however the chassis seems so thin and flexible i dont want to heat it and have damage resulting so i will have to really think thismone out, perhaps using double sided tape and styrene to start with. Ah experimentation is the road tomdiscovery lol.

Thunderslot does sell a hard chassis and motor pod.

I don't have any head to head lap times but I suspect that similar cars on my mdf track would yield the same relationship between brands. Thunderslot Lolas will dominate the class.

Thanks SuperSlab and ModelerBob for your feedback.

From your info it looks like I'd be better off staying with the same makes of cars already in the series. Otherwise I might have to find ways to slow the Thunder Slot Lola down to keep things competitive. I prefer working on the slower ones to make them better.

I received my yellow version at the weekend. What a pretty car, although I have to agree with those who think it is a little flat and fat. But the paint is flawless and the detail is excellent.

My track likes rubber tires, so the stock ones were glued and trued onto their stock rims. On track they work just like an NSR Supergrip. The car is as quick as my NSR Ford GT40MkII, which is a very quick car itself, and I think the Thunderslot is a little quieter and smoother. I did have to true the front tires as well and coat them with nail varnish to get the last little bit of smoothness though. Otherwise a great car.

I used two Slot.it brass motor screws and nuts in the back of the post for now until the correct parts arrive, or until I have a chance to make something that looks like the factory part.

I was surprised at how smooth the car was despite the very flexible chassis and pod, I had expected some chatter, but got none.

Just so everyone understands this, the guy making Thunderslot is the guy that was the technical guy for NSR, so you should expect similar performance.
