Reply axle/wheel for fly lotus 78?

Postby 007jag » Fri Nov 18, 2016 10:10 am

Hello,
I just got a new Fly lotus 78 off EBay & it has a bent rear axle or perhaps a bad wheel, not sure?
The stock part is out of stock - does anyone know an affordable aftermarket replacement?
Thanks for your help & advice,
Jack

If you can't locate a stock replacement rear axle assembly you will have to replace everything with aftermarket parts, including the axle, crown gear, wheels and tires. You would probably be able to use the stock axle bearings.

Hi RichD,
Yeah I figured replacement parts were needed - I suppose what I'm not sure of is the wheels and probably the tires?
I generally run on plastic but do have friends with wood tracks. What would be a good choice for those nice fat rears?
Thanks again,
Jack

If you choose the CB Design 14x12 wheels then the PG 22166FF would be the tires.

Personally, if you change out all that, scrap the stock Fly bushings. They are not as precise as you would want.

Look at the many pictorials on HRW about making inserts for aluminum wheels from the original plastic wheels. Done properly, you would have to look very hard to tell them from a stock wheel especially if you dull the edge of the rim of the aluminum wheel.

Watch out for approximations of metric equivalance when buying parts- 3/32nds is close to 2 mm, but not exact (2.381mm). Just get matching bits and pieces and you won't have to sand down an axle or (don't try it), try to drill out a wheel hub. Just a tip to help you stay out of bother.

It is unlikely that the stock axle is bent. I have encountered Fly wheels that were crooked, if they were only a little out a machine like a Tire Razor could true them up. It is best to true the wheels first, then put the tires on and true those. If you were racing a lot of cars with stock tires and wheels a Tire Razor or similar machine would be a good investment.
