Hello Guys
Have a question
Just picked up a SLOTWINGS FERRARI 512BB on evil-bay. :roll:
It has the adjustable ride height front axle with grub screws. :shhh:
Of coarse it didn't come with the grub screws. :angry-tappingfoot:
Does anyone know what size these screws are ?? :?:

I'm have a problem getting any of my grub screws started, even on my NSR Cars. :violin:
I'd really like to have a tap to use to get the threads cleaned out. :laughing-rolling:

Anyone have a secret for starting these darn screws ??? :?: :violence-stickwhack:

The tap for a NSR is a 4-40. It is a standard size and very easy to find. The tap for say a Slot it is a 2mm - 46 I do believe. I had to go to a tool out let yo find this one. If yo go at it slowly back and forth you can tap the hole in plastic. I got the tape for both sizes just to make life easier.

I just used a Slot.It 2mm machine screw back and forth to tap out the holes ready for the 2mm grub screws in mine.

Most of my cars have axle adjusters, either they came on the car or I added the ones from Slot Car Corner. I have never had to tap the holes. I expect that the screws that you have are the wrong size. You could buy the correct screws. If you know what size your screws are you could drill out the holes with the right drill. The McMaster-Carr site has a chart with the tap drill sizes for each screw. For plastic you really don't need to use a tap. Sometimes it is nice to have a tap on hand if you need to clean up the threads in an aluminum wheel.

I read in a post awhile back the grub screws are not all the same Quality. :scared-eek:
Mike you sent me some grub screws when I order up two NSR Cars from you awhile back :idea:
they seemed to work good, may have to order some parts again. :idea:

I have a well stocked Ace Hardware in town that has small taps and all kinds of numbered drill bits.
If you have a hobby shop nearby that orders from Walthers, they can get metric taps. It may take a bit of search engine work....

I have run into problems tapping out for ride height screws where the tap removed too much plastic. If you go the tap route, I’d suggest running the tap in just far enough to start cutting threads, then finish up with the grub screw.

For a bit of help getting screws started, try using a countersink bit, a drill bit, or a needle file to put a small chamfer around the hole.
When using the screw to cut the threads, use a bit of lubricant (saliva is no cost and readily available) and treat the screw like a tap. Give it 1/2 turn, back out 1/4 turn, repeat. You might want to completely back the screw out to clean the threads and relube during the process.
