Travel back with me to the thrilling days of yesteryear in SCCA racing of the 50's and 60's courtesy of www.tamsoldracecarsite.net/.

Euro-American specials, road racing hot rods, gentlemen racing privateers, oil men racing teams; its all here. Great photo source for building your own version of these historic cars.

I'm considering trying my hand at carving my own master of a Devin, which was used for all kinds of "specials".

That's what a race car looks like! That very car is one of the ones on my bench right now.

While most of the pics at Tams are from SCCA racing on the west coast, I grew up watching SCCA racing at Green Valley Raceway in the DFW area and the regional races held on city streets in Austin in the 50's and 60's.

I see that the only slot car that is close to a Devin style body is a rather spendy MMK 750 Ferrari. The Devin body was designed loosely on the 750 Monza.

Can you expound on that, Ronnie? Help me out here.

Waaytoo:

I assume you are referring to the Devin.

Of all the early fiber glass "kit car" manufacturers in California, Devins were relatively popular for creating a racing "special" in the 50's /60's. The bodies were stylish, could be mounted on a variety of European /custom tube chassis, using almost any engine, from tiny 750cc Crosleys, VW, Porsche, and up to small block American V8s. The bodies cost only $300 in the late 50's. They were manufactured in a variety of wheelbases to accept different donor chassis.

This a good site with a lot of vintage pics.

"Notice the cars NOT slammed to the ground with kick panels scraping."

Also notice that the roll bar stops just above the driver's neck. Did the driver/team really think that was a good idea?

Devin-bodied cars also won sports car classes at Pikes Peak, which would make a neat project car to emulate. See the web or the September '62 Hot Rod magazine for source material.

I know a lot about Devins, I just can't figure out "MMK 750 Ferrari", unless its MMK, the slot car maker.

I personally think that Vette in the top pick, was in a suspension unload. either coming off a corner, or a hill top. Most of the early vettes sat relatively low in race trim.

Yes sir that would be the MMK car. Last time I checked it was $160 at Electric Dreams.
