First Car Series!

Postby historiceng » Sun Sep 09, 2018 3:37 am

Having read Waytoomuch's brilliant post, my wife Bryony, said how cool it would be to have a series of modelling "your 1st car"....... Mine's a '73 Cortina estate with half vinyl roof and windsurf rack!

If we proxy raced though, we europeans would have to have a "balance of power" adjustment if there were too many straights, I had a 1.6 L crossflow engine.... 80hp ? No competition for your wonderful V8 muscles....

Lol. Eric, my first car was 396 powered 66 Chevelle! You are right about the power adjustment!

Oh such cool first cars, no wonder by college books (here in England) were full of sketches of girls and American cars! :flags-waveusa:

I always thought that the 1960 Starliner hardtop was the best looking Ford of the era. The next best was the 1966 Galaxie 500 for me.

The hearse was technically my second car. The first was a light green 1952 Dodge Meadowlake my grandmother left me, and my father stole it and traded it for a new car for himself before I got my driver's license.

My first real car (not counting parent's cars that I drove) was a 1960 MGA Mk II with a 1600 CC engine this was about 1967. This was the beginning of about a 15 year love affair with sliding curtains and very leaky soft tope. Note in 1971, when I met and began to date my wife to be, she was driving a 1970 Seita (Spelling ?) Spring. An Italian hand made car based on a Fiat 850, not a roll up window in the bunch. Marriage and a baby in the wings forced me to purchase a 1962 Black Impala Super Sport with red interior, a 327 engine and four speed transmission. It is hard to think that today (47 years later) I drive a Hyundai Elantra with less than neck snapping power shifted through a slush box and the wife has a Mazda 5 Mini Van that screams "Soccer Grandma".

My first car that I bought during college was a '65 Chevelle 283 2dor sedan. The first car I bought new was a '72 Vega GT. Neither is available as a 1/32 model car as far as I know.

My first car was a 1972 Pinto. Looked like a little old ladies car. But it was setup to autocross with sway bars, Koni shocks, Offenhauser manifold, Mallory ignition and headers. Would spin the tires in the first three gears. Ran in Production modified class in Denver.

One thing to remember about the 60's and early 70's American cars is, yes they did have lots of power, but did not have good brakes and could not corner very well, so maybe on a twisty course you would have half a chance.

My first car gentlemen. 1963 EH Holden sedan. 179 cubic inch straight 6.
Worked weekends and holidays to save the money in high school.
I washed it for a couple of months before I got my licence.
OK ,maybe a couple of quick runs around the neighbourhood.
MJK make a 1/32 scale. Couldn't resist.

Man, that Starliner is sweet.

Mine was a '67 Mercury Comet pillarless hardtop - the Cyclone lookalike. There is an AMT 1/25 kit, so I have that common problem. I could fudge and use the re-released Monogram body kit for the Fairlane, though.

If I built it like my real one, it would look great and be slower than ****. Those 289 2-barrels were really 17 second cars....

My 1st car was a 1967 Pontiac Firebird, 400 cubic inches, 325 hp, 4 speed. Green with white vinyl top, white interior, purchased in 1972. Only had it for 8 months til l found a 1970 Z-28 Camaro. The Firebird had a Rochester 4 barrel with secondary's as big as a Dixie cup, lol. Swear you could see gas gauge going down when I got on it!!!
