If the supply can't be adjusted, you just build the adjustment at the driver's station.
I have half a mind to get one just as a cheap back up..

I've got the exact same power supply and yes, it IS adjustable. You just turn the orange fitting on the pot, found at the left. Mine goes from 9 to 14 volts. Fine tuning the maximum voltage (RPM) to the track and cars makes a huge difference in the fun factor.

Never mind - I think from RichD's linked article I have the answer - I have seen less power in curves with two or more cars on the track - and de-slotting when a car comes off. I think I'll try the $17 unit as a first try.

If I do this, I suspect I'll physically splice the output of the upgraded power supply to the electrical fitting that goes to the Carrera 30352 Control Unit - correct? Or is there another way to do this?

These power supplies have terminals for the plug to connect to and for the power out to connect to. One of the deals you loosen a screw and put the wire under the contact then tighten the screw. I've used one for 8 years or so. Mine is the adjustable from 9-12, I think. For our racing 12 is fine, I never run with less power. I have cars set up for newbies and kids that are slower and easier to run. My track is not hard to drive anyway.

Another thing about the one shown by the OP is that there are only three power out sets of terminals, the first three to the left are for power in.

On these power supply's, how do you guard the 120v terminals from kids or dogs?

This is a pretty simple power supply to use if you have any experience with electric. If you don't, you should probably stick to wall warts and stock power supplies so you don't burn up your components, cars or maybe start a fire.

If this power supply is the same as the one I use, starting at left, the first 6 terminals are 3 power out negative and 3 power out positive. The last 3 terminals are the power in, pos, neg and ground. If you are concerned about people or pets getting hurt by playing with the terminals, I would just cover it with a box of some sort. This is really pretty easy to setup and use.
