Hmm....maybe this one will stay affordable. I've always wanted to get this livery so I could change it to the Andretti car but the originals go for such silly prices I'd kind of given up on it. I was there in 88 and got to meet them all together in the paddock area so it's an "old guy" thing.

Well the white kit is coming too in about a month. That would be a good start?

I picked up the above pictured car Thursday at Greg Walker's "The Race Place". I really like the red/white/yellow paint scheme. They really have trimmed the interior down to next to nothing. They even cut off the bottom half of the driver's legs. My car weighed 69gms. After a little tire sanding it ran very well on wood. Close to what I would expect from urethanes. Something of note, unlike earlier slot.it 956s and 962s there are no BBS rims under the wheel disks. I assume this was another weight saving measure.

I'm no expert on Slot-it cars but have a few and they seem to get progressive lighter and faster? Is it by popular demand, or to keep pace with NSR? - I don't know. They are so light and fast I don't much enjoy them on my home track, but they do make some very attractive and desirable models. I've been thinking I might try to add weight inside a body and see how it turns out. Maybe start with plasticine and distribute around the inside.

If you want to add weight, I would add it low to the chassis. I don't think they have weakened the body in the pursuit of cutting weight. You can always switch to a 18K hawk motor to slow them down a bit. We have done that to a few slot.It cars at DeBary Glen and it improves their driveability on the wood track quite a bit.

Bob, I adjust the voltage on my track all the time to suit different vehicles, but merely reducing the power on a Slot-it car makes it a bit too easy to drive. Adding weight low in the chassis would probably make it even more planted on the track than it already is.
What I'm after is something like the driving properties that the Racer cars have had all along (and lately LMM too); a heavy (resin) body on a Slot-it chassis. Still plenty fast, but with more mass in the body the driving is very different, and a lot of fun - just my opinion. I though it might be worth a try, to add weight to the body of a regular Slot-it car.

You could use some modeling clay and press that into the body areas you want?

Re. Slot.it News- and weighing down an ultra-light...

Postby balsaworks » Mon Jan 13, 2014 3:56 pm

I just did a test with a Slot-it GT40. The original Slot-it car weighed 63 grams so I wanted to add 40 grams to bring it to the same weight class as the LMM GT40 which is exactly 100. There isn't all that much space to work with so I just added pieces of lead at convenient spots, and stuck them in place with hot glue for a quick test .
Two bars went inside each of the side panels and then a rectangular sheet upright on the back of the interior tray, 25 grams in all.
Image

Then I put two more pieces of lead sheet in the chassis, 15 grams in all, inside and in front of the motor pod.

Image
The car runs very nicely, very similar to the LMM version. The chassis and motor have no problems hauling the extra weight and it handles really well. The top speed is very high but the added inertia makes the car react slower and
that is very enjoyable. I guess the thin shell of a body will brake more easily if it's raced in anger, with that extra weight, and maybe there will be more wear on the drive train too?
In any case this was a fun test and there is room for some more experimenting.

If you want to test adding weight to the body, tape a quarter with masking tape to wherever you think the body needs weight. When you get it where you want it, take off the body and put some sticky lead on the under side at the same location.

You have to be careful with the guide mount on Slot.it (maybe any) cars. if it gets tail happy and snaps wide, that extra weight could cause the mount to crack open. That happened on my GT40, and I had to make a brass tubing mount to repair it.

The thin type of wheel balancing weights stick better than sheet lead, and can be cut to size. You have to watch they don't interfere with your interior.
