About 6 months ago I purchased a NSR 917k. When I got the car I looked it over and for whatever reason just put it aside and never even put it on the track. Not sure if I was having issues with my track at the time or had already tore the track down to make the new one. So last night looking for something different to play around and tinker with I grabbed this car off the shelf. I totally expected I would have to change out the motor to something milder for my smaller layout.
I cant believe what a surprise it was when I put this car on the track straight out of the box. No tire sanding or anything adjusted, it was perfect in everyway. The Shark 20k motor was even great on my track, I had the voltage set about 10 volts and it still had the power and speed but still very controllable without feeling like it had too much torque.

I have had a few NSR cars in the past like the Vette and Porsche 997 that I did repaints with but I honestly don't remember them being this nice out of the box. It's funny, after Kurt's post yesterday asking what we prefer in a car I had to rethink my answer after putting this on the track last night. If every car ran this nice and smooth out of the box with nothing done to it I think I might be ok with that. I like working on cars and tuning them to get them the way I want but the way I want them to run is exactly how this car was without doing anything to it. Just a great little car and I know I will have to get another one down the road.

Yes, this is good stuff Lee. Cool story and photos. I'm not the biggest NSR person (just one) but that SHARK motor is a nice one for home tracks and runs well.

Am I the only one who noticed the Gulf colors on a Lee post?

I have two NSR 917s coming by special courier on the day after Thanksgiving or the day after that, we don't know yet. Its a matched pair of blue/white stripes and red/white stripes 917s and since they came at a bargain price, I can't wait to see them. I have some replacement (sane) motors ready to go. Its going to be fun watching these two scream around the new track.

Those NSR are some good runners out of the box, but some do need the additional tweaks now and then. I bought a Fly F-40 racing version that was like that. Great car right out of the box. Harry ran it on the Mid-Mo, so he knows how it runs. :)

I bought some NSR cars back when they first came out, and eventually decided they were just insane fast (remember the little Renaulkts?)and never really looked at them much anymore. Then, through the efforts of some fine friends, I heard about two 917s for sale and I snapped them up. Still smooth as glass, quiet and strong, but not nearly as crazy as the ones I had before. I may see about getting matching motors for the earlier ones. These are just perfect, straight from the box.
