Is there some kind of story that goes with this thing?

I think they are/were and English band. It too looks better in person.

Google says it's a Swiss electronic band.
I noticed the Swiss flag on the door. Name behind it is one of the two band members.

Their claim to fame is the song "The Race"
They also did "Oh Yeah" to name another.

I'd never heard of The Race before this edition came out. I ran it past the guy who turned me on to them a few years back. He was stationed in Germany around the time they were well known in Europe. (mid 80's) He didn't remember it either- but later found that it was on one of his albums. It's not a stand-out song in my opinion, but then again their stuff isn't really for everyone.

Of all the great racing paint schemes that car could be done in and that is what they come up with?
And these manufacturers wonder why certain cars don't sell?
I say good luck with that one.
I will not be purchasing it.
And people are knocking scalextric for the K&K Insurance superbird?
Yeah, I know it looks bad too but not as much as a joke as the above cobra.
I guess when they clearance them out they can always be bought cheaply and repainted......
Just my opinion though....

I can't wait to see the next one to celebrate Lady GAGA.....
Maybe they will have a figure of her driving it.
Maybe a Myley Cyrus one too with twerking action figure included.
Will be the talk of the media for months.
A great way to get slot cars back into the main stream media!

I thought I wasn't nuts- about this at least. When the car was announced, Dieter was supposed to be holding a microphone, which is a more apt than an over-sized wrench. Also, the preproduction color scheme is more appealing- to me at least.
pic from then:

The time stamp would show that Jeremy and I were thinking the same thing at the same time. Scary!

Pretty much.
I think it is a lot different than the Scalextric Dodge. This was done as a collectible as Jeremy stated. Just a special run of this car, nothing to lose sleep over. There are several race versions of the Cobra already. In fact, 4 total (including hardtop) since they released the car almost a year ago. 4 race cars from the same mold in one year is a lot more than we see from other brands.
I think it's a hoot. I likely will not buy one, but I am sure collectors will swallow them up rather quickly. I have all the race versions and if the folks at Carrera want to have a little fun with a car or two, hey...I'm not complaining. :)
The Scalextric on the other hand is much more offensive to me. A clearly botched effort of a American classic.
