über kewl Mercedes Unimog build

Postby studioRS » Wed Feb 26, 2014 10:45 pm

I'm still trying to acquire Carrera track parts for my RS Bergrennen and while this long process is unfolding, and to help keep my enthusiasm spirits up there, why not build a proper German rescue rig for the course! Here is a little graphic I made for me to create. That's what happens up here in snow country, I get stuck on my Mac for hours on end... I drive on snow everyday, my driveway has been a solid ice/snow fest for three months and it's going to snow more tomorrow! Wahoo! Note: complete with retro skis and what better of a rig to extract a wayward race car that got deslotted!

Image

My planned RS Bergrennen track venue is going to be based on the Roßfeld hill climb in Germany, way up in the Bavarian Alps. I've got a small room in the basement that will handle these duties and promise I'll start a thread on the build soon. It's basically a 12' x 5' size track with elevation changes. Will look like this.

To set your mind straight, think bier, bratwurst, lederhosen, loud open megaphone Porsche 911s, vintage Porsche 908s, howling 5cyl turbocharged fire spitting Audi quattros and this.

Wait a minute, race track venue in the Alps - stay focused - visualze this too.

Ok, now that I've got your attention, back to the subject Unimog'ster.

The proper rescue rig for this area is usually a Volkswagen T4 syncro, T5 Eurovan or something similar like the new VW Anorak pickup. I'm going with what I want at my track and decided to build a Mercedes-Benz Unimog 406 to "Bergwacht" (Alpine Rescue) standards instead! (see above rendition for decals and graphics).

Mercedes-Benz Unimog 406 for inspiration

Another source of insipired'ness with a crafty German built 1/24 Unimog RR track cleaner

Mix it all up and follow me along on this build. Maybe it will be static, maybe I'll build him a cousin cleaner, maybe it will be a monster MOG!

Cheers, Thompson

I'm planning on modifying a SCX Hummer I bought into a track cleaning vehicle so I am working on ideas on how to make it work.

I want to keep my build inexpensive, but part of me wants to make it totally scale too. Mine will most likely be a static display and scale.

Here is another Mercedes Unimog modified for cleaning.

What I found available Made in Germany of course (or maybe outsourced in CN?) is the 1/32 Weise Mercedes-Benz Unimogs. Hands down the cats meow for scale. Totally baller kewl and expensive. Several models available, the choice is yours. I want to try and restrain myself from caving and buying one, OMG. I will try my best HRW scout honors (promise) to make my little $9.96 Tamiya beast look like these.

Love the Unimog -- what a cool vehicle. I've always wanted to do that Tamiya Unimog into a slot car, so I can't wait to see what you come up with.

It's surprising how big they are. In pictures they look like a slightly large pickup truck. In person, they're beasts almost 10 feet tall.

There's one not far from here. I pass it when I go to one of our tracks

Here's a giant zamboni track cleaner I did a few years back...

Hah, that's awesome, Rob. :) You do have a way with those Fly truck axles.

Does that Unimog in your neighborhood have the rounded nose, or the later squared-off nose?

Kurt, its just like the green one above, but its white. You actually drove right in front of it. It was on the right when you drove out to David's plastic roadcourse a few years back.

The Revell German GTK Boxer kit arrived and the vinyl tires are solid and 38mm in dia. They look right but just a tick too tall. Optimally 32-35mm dia will be best. Sending this one back. Also, the Tamiya Unimog kit arrived and the dia is 32mm for the stock Desert Dog kits tires.

So, back to researching tires, which is proving to be quite the exercise without having to buy every 1/35 scale large truck kit made!

This Trumpeter ZIL-157 6x6 Military Truck kit tires, from what photos ive seen, look measure at 32mm dia., possibly the correct width and tread pattern? With these big trucks bonus is you receive 7 tires total. I might be able to use the axles, gerry cans, winch, engine, other bits and maybe the rear stake bed. Buy another kit and I can make another Unimog and have a spare tire for each.
