Scalextric ... Trans-Am

I'm most likely opening a can of worms here but why not.

With the 2 new releases there are now 5 Trans-Am cars to choose from.
I have the Mustangs & both Camaros. I also got the Cougar for Christmas but have not done anything with it yet.
They can all be great if you buy enough parts to throw at it.
What I'd like to know is which one you think is best if you just take it out of the box, get rid of the magnet, add some good tires & weight & do some basic tuning.

I like the looks of the 69 Camaro best but I think the 70&1/2 is the better car out on the track.

6 months ago I only had the Moffat Mustang, today I've got about 10 of them (along with a couple of Resin bodied cars and Revell kits on Pioneer chassis, a few Pioneer mustangs) I'm hooked on them. I'm a bit on the opposite side of the fence from Johnny, My favourites are the 70 Camaros, but that's just what's great about them. There's something for everybody.
I don't have a cougar yet. But I looking into it.
They will take a little bit of rough stuff without too much to damage (unlike my classic F1 cars) and they are a lot of fun for your buck and to me that's what it's all about.
Mine are all getting the RMS tune up, which are pretty cheap to do and just make them that bit more equal and smoother.

I my case the way my track is layed out its a dead heat between the 69 Camaro and the 69/70 Mustang. The Camaro has the edge on the straight but the Mustang comes right back in the corners, very entertaining race if they are stock. I haven't done much hard running with the 70 Camaro, Cougar, or Challenger yet thow :whistle:

JYD - I actually don't agree with the statement that they are great if you throw enough parts at them. I throw only one part at mine because I run on wood: PPG Urethane Tires. Everything else is a stock part and the chassis is tuned. I have all of my cars running very competitively with each other including the Cougar and Challenger.

Take a look at some of the tuning articles here - lots of great ideas to make these cars run very well.

We race them stock at our store except for a guide change and weight on a wood track (no mag). Not enough time with the Cougar and Challenger yet, but the two Camaro's and the Mustang have all been very competitive with each other....we even race them with the stock tires. So I echo the statement from Harry.

In all the years we have been running cars here, it would be a 24 beer, 8 slotburger argument to decide whether the Fly Classic LeMans cars or the Scaley TransAm cars were the most fun we ever had. I would lean toward the Scaley TransAms, which I would lump together with the RMS resin bodies on Scaley TransAm chassis, but I could argue almost as much for the Fly Classics.

The punchline here is that we always run them stock with tire changes allowed. That should tell you a lot right there.

Bobby, run in your gears with a little Tamiya coarse polishing compound, and take all the slack out of your axles by cutting nylon washers and clipping them in place (so you don't ruin something trying to pull the wheels off). True the wheels and the tires, and get the body to float by unscrewing the body mount screws. You'll catch 'em. I can't stand running magnets, but before I became such a snob about it, I found a huge selection of super magnets at Prof Motor.
